Mike Dean - Wolves vs. Villa

Well that goes down as one of the dirtiest PL games in quite some time, lots of niggly fouls but also plenty of cynical ones from both sides.  Grealish falling like a sack of spuds on most occasions.  But Mike Dean handled it magnificently, measured throughout, and most importantly consistent right the way through.

Unlike Atkinson last week with his bizarre refusal to book Xhaka for the most cynical of fouls, Dean showed 3 yellows in the first half hour and all could not be argued with.  He was consistent with this throughout, but also played some excellent advantages in spite of the fouling.

Moutinho may feel a little hard done-by as his first yellow Grealish fouled him and made a meal of it to somehow get the free-kick, but other than that faultless from Dean, in my opinion.

Why do my posts take an absolute age to be loaded onto the forums?  Is this a policy in place for everyone??

Couldn’t disagree more - thought it was a really poor performance

Every contact is not a foul - every foul is not a card - his approach (the PGMO approach ?) killed the game as a spectacle - no flow, no tempo, poor foul detection - late in the game the Wolves forward grab round the neck and was pulled back yet hard the free kick awarded against him - baffling . The approach of Villa - led by (edited. Leave the personal insults out!) Dean Smith and portrayed on the field by Grealish and McGinn doesn’t make it easy but referees should be above this - recognise and understand what is and isn’t a foul and act accordingly - the “give the easy, safe” free kick is wrong - award when a foul is committed not when a player falls down and appeals

Failed to deal with the clear dissent shown towards him, had no interaction or management with the players - peacocked around like he was above the game - only positive thing I could say about his performance was that he didn’t affect the result

Contrast that with Darren England on the Newcastle game - spoke and communicated with the players, excellent foul detection, sensible use of his cards - allowed  the players to challenge and compete and didn’t fall for the theatrics from some players

We are in danger of killing the game as a spectacle - football is meant to be fast and physical, players  are allowed to challenge and “get stuck in” - if our referees take this out of the game we will end up with football like in Italy in the 80’s and 90’s - boring, no contact sport

A very safe official once told me that there are some games which are horrible to Referee and that you must keep a tight(er) grip on for as long as it takes for the players to behave.

I thought Mr Dean had a good game and to criticise him for the misdeeds of the players is a tad churlish to say the least

All about opinions - wouldn’t class this as a horrible game - more that the approach of the referee made it that way - needless cards and random decision making - terrible spectacle to watch through the incessant blowing for the merest of contacts
