match database
« on: Sat 05 Jan 2019 23:35 »
i posted this on the other forum, but dont see it moved over, [maybe missed it], anyways, im sure most of you are aware of the pulling together of referees lists from previous seasons in the i spy old refs forum, so i decided to put the info all together in a worthwhile project. [no point dredging old books and papers and not utilising all the info learnt. not sure which database style i prefer, ill let you have a say on what you think.

one of them you select a match and it brings up all the details for that match, attendance, managers, ref, lineups, ht, ft score, goalscorers, goal times [if known], disciplinary [if known] and a few notes on the particular match. it contains matches for all 42 weeks of the season [in this case 1970/71], and is done through excel, which make it easy to view, but is not really a web based project as it uses macros and formulas.

the other has come about from me reading old shoot magazines, and my fascination at gleaning info from the match reports. so i pulled together my version of it, that has all the matches for scotland and england in a weekly printable booklet style. it has lineups, refs, att, ht, ft, goalscorers and where known goal times. it details all matches from all the 4 english leagues, fa cup, league cup, european matches, internationals, scottish league, scot cup, scot league cup and the diddy cups [watney cup, anglo italian cup and texaco cup.

Many thanks mande70 for all the hard work you have obviously put into this project. I would be quite happy with either format providing the stats are easy to access and view. Looking forward to seeing developments.

I like both formats, although the format with match details and notes will obviously put more meat on the bones for those of us interested in more than just the match statistics.

If you need any help with expanding details for Rochdale's matches, just let me know.

I find the first format easier to read personally.  Thank you for your continued great work on this.

Excellent work mande70! Both formats have their virtues but I particularly like the second with its focus on the key facts at a glance - very clearly presented - which makes it a very convenient point of reference although the first format has more depth for those who require it.

remember the results section in shoot and match from the 70’s? well heres something similar. i have used the first division as an example but i have done it for all the cups and divisions in england and scotland for a couple of seasons so far. as you can see where possible ive included referee, attendance and goalscorers and times. the finished article has all cups, divisions, european and internationals [involving british teams], and is in pdf format and printable.

here you go season 1970/71 in all its glory. 463 matches in this file, each with referee, lineup, attendance, goalscorers, goal times, ht/ft
[some games dont have a ref, or goal time, as they are not available through the research channels i have used, but there is very few missing. for example i think there is only 5 refs missing.

you get the picture. as comprehensive as it gets. expect more of these for the future, as i have now got the data input down to a very easy procedure and the rest is automated, so the process should be quick for the other seasons.

happy to hear feedback both good/bad lol, only way i can improve. if you spot any errors feel free to notify me and ill check.

database has taken a new turn, as i have now been able to formulate a method in which to place 15 seasons + in one sheet, and the user selects the season, week and match lineup by simple combo control box
gives a rather unique and touch of colour by adding the form charts to it as well

Brilliant stuff. Have you typed in all the data yourself or downloaded it from other sources?

all my own stuff TVOS, i use various newspapers, and fansites as research but clarify eveyrthing various timesthrough different sources, asi have found fan sites, somenewspapers even rothmans to have made errors.

i also have a Scottish version and I am looking at a way to place cup results into this. still working on a suitable layout for that.

I have alllineups and results, refs etc for both england and scotland but obviously it takes time to input all the data. working on the 70's at moment but i have completed 97-2010 premier league.

I read ‘fansites’ as ‘fantasies’ then.

Brilliant stuff though.

I'd love to be able to follow this but unfortunately I cannot get anything but the match days 1 and 10 which you feature above. What do I need to do to access the full database, thank you?
