Think World Cup 2010 Germany v England and Frank Lampard.

 Oh dear oh dear !!!

And I am a Sunderland fan.

Perhaps the poor chap was terrified of forty six thousand fans [ the THIRD biggest attendance of the day including eight games played in the PL], but really, really there is no excuse whatsoever for not seeing Bradford had scored a perfectly good goal.

………..I should add that I sit twelve rows behind the opposite goal and around us as one we thought Bradford had indeed equalised.

Having attended the game, I thought Sunderland had the rub of the luck but Darren England was let down badly by both his assistants. The goal was a really poor decision - I was sat at the opposite end of the ground and about 40 rows back and could tell it was well over!

As for Mr McGrath, IMO he missed an act of violent conduct during an off the ball incodenr, advising Darren England to award a citation for what appeared to me to be a stamp!

I thought Darren England refereed the game very well. Sensible approach, tried to keep cards in his pocket for as long as he could, attempted to play advantage and always seemed in control! Definitely ready for a PL trial IMO!

We must sit not far from one another.
As a fan only I have to say I thought Flanagan was a very lucky boy indeed, however the lad who held him back whilst he was on the floor also has a lot to answer for and already on a YC he was also a very lucky boy.
I would agree with your assessment of Darren England. It was well into the second half before he got his cards out, and indeed at least tried to let the game flow.

Reading everyone’s thoughts on this, it all seems a tad harsh... if the official isn’t sure then surely they can’t be expected to guess and give a goal? In my opinion you’re always better to not give something you can’t be 100% sure of?

The assistant would have been about 15 yards out when the first shot went in and allowing for a 'decent' turn of pace that would be down to 8 or 9 yards where he would not have had any angle to see. As the gk messes about with the ball and it appears to go back over the line the post would now be in the way as the assistant still would not have made the goaline. At no point and in my opinion through no fault of his own, he was in no position to make a conclusive decision. Sat in the stands you would have had a better view

If you're 90% certain, surely best to give it.

Not giving a goal deprives a team of a goal.

Giving an incorrect one gifts a team a goal.

The damage is the same  - plus or minus a goal.

Referees and assistants spend a lot of time guessing anyway.

My opinion would be that referees should never give something that they can’t be sure of. If you’re guessing and gift someone something you’re making it up. This leaves you open to all sorts of different criticism from within the game.

I would strongly argue that you’re better to not give one that’s gone in but you can’t be sure of than to give a goal that factually never crossed the goal line as you have then given something that never happened? Lesser of two evils I would say
