Mark Clattenburg
« on: Thu 30 Jun 2022 13:25 »
This in today's BBC Football News online:

Former English Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg has been appointed as head of Egypt's newly created refereeing committee. The decision was made at a meeting of the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) on Wednesday. The EFA's move comes as local referees have been criticised by a lot of clubs in the Egyptian Premier League over their officiating this season. In recent years teams have threatened to withdraw from the league in protest over what they perceive as poor decisions which have cost them vital points.

Clattenburg officiated more than 570 domestic, European and international matches between 2000 and 2017, with two of his career highlights coming in 2016 when he took charge of both the Champions League final in Milan and the European Championship final between Portugal and France.

The 47-year-old left the English top flight in February 2017 to take over as the head of refereeing in Saudi Arabia, replacing compatriot Howard Webb.

Clattenburg has also had a stint working in China.

Is he gone from Greece now with this new role? If so I’m sure you will be happy edy.

Reflecting on his time there may I ask what would be your main criticism of his management?

Good luck to Clattenburg and to Egyptian refereeing.  I never particularly cared for Clattenburg's style ( though highly significant people in UEFA clearly did ) A case of " the old bizarre in Cairo " perhaps.

There was zero chance of that happening anyway.  Elleray may have gone, but there will still be a lot of traditionalists on the FA's Referees Committee who won't like Clattenburg.

Him replacing Riley would be the definition of retrograde

Yes, he is gone from Greece now. I am happy about it even though, I was his supporter when he came.

The only thing that he cared about was his big contract and appointments. No development, foreign referees even in SL2 (2nd league). He was never interested to renew the referees and observers lists. Especially the observers list on all 3 categories are pretty much the same since 2018. Former referees who are observers for over 20 years, old enough who are only interested for their fee. Nothing to contribute, no help on the referees.

IMO his biggest mistake is that he never took the time to learn the referees (especially on SL2 and 3rd league). These referees are the future.

Many thanks edy, I was a huge fan of Clattenburg as a referee so it is a shame for me to read he had such a negative impact on Greek refereeing in your view, as I hold your opinion in the highest regard. Hopefully he will have more luck in Egypt.

I was never a Clattenburg fan - far too full of himself and little regard for authority - but thought most others were Clattenburg groupies. It’s interesting to see some of the comments here from many of RTR’s most respected posters and to realise I was very much not in the minority.
Saudi Arabia, Greece and Chinas gain is very much Egypts loss

Good news for Egyptian Football! I'm sure Clatts will add great value to their refereeing.

Clattenburg has certainly been around the world a bit over the last 5 years or so - Saudi Arabia, China, Greece and now Egypt.

From the outside, it does seem like he's perhaps struggled to really settle anywhere. Whilst we've previously discussed how 13 years has been an awfully long time for Mike Riley to be in charge of PGMO, I'm not sure 2 years is enough to make a difference to a league. Howard Webb has done over 5 years in MLS and seems to have had a positive impact.

Other than bringing Hackett out of retirement, I'm struggling to think of how pretty much any replacement could be considered "retrograde".

far too full of himself

How to say "I have never met him" without actually saying I have never met him. If you didn't like his style, fair enough, if you thought he was a rubbish referee, fair enough, if you think he is rubbish as a referee manager again fair enough, you are fully entitled to your opinion and I'll respect that opinion but do NOT make character judgements especially when it is quite clear that you have done so purely on your perception of him as opposed to any first hand personal knowledge. Mark isn't perfect, no-one is, and there are many things I think he could have done differently but one thing he most certainly isn't and nor has ever been is "far too full of himself". As a person he is very warm, very loving and gentle and puts his family and loved ones before himself every single time. He is an amazing Uncle to bmb jr and has always looked out for him, supported him and encouraged him. I could sit here and list for you thousands of times when he has put my son first, gone out of his way to be there for him, done something for him just to put a smile on the kids face or to make him feel special and loved - that is what he is as a person.

Imho, Clattenburg has just chased the money and no real appetite to establish a proper footballing network of bringing through referees in either country he has been in.  From sources that I have spoken too in Saudi and Greece there was more of a self driven agenda rather than a team ethic.  Whilst I can understand some people are driven by money, there has to also be a balance of what are you going in there for.  Shame really as a very good referee in his day.
