IF as appears it's gone in and goal not been given it's shocking and there needs to be a major investigation.

I don't blame the assistant for not intervening but I think VAR should have asked Oliver to carry out a GDS check there and then and had a thorough review.

If there's been confirmation the system wasn't working I think Aston Villa should have let Sheffield United score at the start of the second half.

Who will go first - Mike Riley or Dominic Cummings?!

Or rather, which one is more untouchable?

I have four questions:

1. Under the competition rules who has the job of making sure the GDS is working. Is it the responsibility of the home club or is it the referee? Or both?
2. What will the repercussions be? Club fine?
3. Why couldn’t Burt come in with a flag?
4. Is it within VAR Prerogative to intervene with GDS?

I am not surprised they didn’t offer to let them score being in the position that they are in!

I reckon they should fine the club and get them to play their next game behind closed doors.

Will send a message to the rest of the league...

According to protocol it is the referee’s responsibility to check GLT works which he appears to have redone at half time. It would take a brave man to overturn the one system that is deemed infallible. But did goalkeeper hide ball from cameras? VAR appears empowered to overturn clear and obvious errors but would VAR have confidence to do so?

Please can someone clarify the protocol.
Is a human AR or VAR allowed to use VAR technology to review a decision made by GLS technology?

Nothing to say VAR cannot and therefore it would appear VAR in human form can override a clear and obvious error.

Looking back to the footage after this happened - Oliver taps his watch and then taps his earpiece - that suggests to me he said “I didn’t get the vibrate on the watch and VAR didn’t page me”.

Which probably meant that VAR were happy it wasn’t a goal.

The referee gets a buzz on his watch and Goal through his ear piece

I have four questions:

1. Under the competition rules who has the job of making sure the GDS is working. Is it the responsibility of the home club or is it the referee? Or both?

When the referee arrives at the ground they always check the GLT both ends.  Looking at the statements that have already been released these checks were done by Michael Oliver pre-match, no surprise, he's not a referee who would forget his duty and at the time he checked they were working. Hawkeye seem to be claiming the cameras failed due to the position of the goalkeeper, defender & goalpost! The buzzer for the goal finally sounded on Oliver's watch at half time.

As to why VAR didn't intervene only Mike Riley can answer that one!
Hajrá Lilák. Csak a Kispest. Hajrá Magyarok! Hajrá játékvezetői csapat! Soha ne add fel. Nincs sárga kérem!!! No Chris Kavanagh doesn't live in Ashton or even in the Greater Manchester area!!

Thanks for clarifying BMB.

Statement From Hawkeye sounds like a bit of cop out really. A real shame for Sheffield Utd. How many decisions have they had for against them this season!? Ridiculous

This is what makes the game and its officials a laughing stock, I'm afraid.  There was a referee, an assistant, goal line technology and VAR with its various officials. Yet still they fail to see that a goal was scored.  It was obvious and easy to check.  The TV cameras showed very quickly that the keeper had taken the ball behind the line, which was patently obvious because it showed the ball actually behind the post.  It is difficult to see why the normally reliable GDS failed when it normally works to a millimetre or so. But the human factor could have resolved this in seconds.

What I find most incredible is the failure of the referee, a man acknowledged as the best in the country, to consult VAR, and for those at the VAR bunker to fail to alert him.  As I said, such a catalogue of errors does the Premier League no credit.  If Aston Villa were to survive because of that and relegate, say, Bournemouth, we may have a serious controversy in a few weeks time.

As a light hearted aside, I did see a picture on t'internet of the VAR monitors with Stevie Wonder sat in front of them.

As I understand it the referee cannot ask for a review or initiate one, it has to come from VAR.

It really needs a statement from PGMOL to say what should have happened.  Already Mark Clattenburg has come out and said VAR should have overruled yet Bobby Madley has said that VAR couldn't get involved under VAR protocol.  They are both fairly recent ex-Premier League referees and they can't both be correct, so it needs some leadership from the powers that be.
