Liverpool v Southampton Paul Tierney

Not a comment regarding the Referee but should the disallowed Salah goal have been given?

When Salah is off the pitch though his own momentum he is deemed to be on the dead ball line. So too must be the Southampton defender who is off the pitch. There's a Southampton defender on the line under the crossbar so isn't Salah level, therefore onside when the ball is played forward?

Mr Cann is one of the finest and best assistants this country has produced in many a year. I don’t know the exact letter of the law however the commentator suggested that the offside was called due to Salah returning from off the field, giving the attacker a succinct advantage.

Happy to be corrected by people of superior intellect on here!

I too wondered that - certainly an interesting one.

The clip from about 5:15 shows that one defender is on the line with another and Salah off the pitch so in Law all three are level when Milner shoots. It should have counted.

What is the relevant phase too?

Is it when the initial shot comes in which the goalkeeper saves or when the ball then ends up heading back in Salah's direction?

(Not that it really matters as I think Salah is onside on both occasions!)

When the ball is played through that he scores from, Salah is back on the pitch only has the player on the in-goal line behind him, the player who went off the pitch with him has moved in front, so offside and a correct call.

We will remember them.”  Laurence Binyon

The decision seems to rest on whether the ball was played by a Liverpool or Southampton player after being saved by the goalkeeper?
