Well what can I say about Gillett? Just two words sum up his performance - exemplary and class.
A busy first half, which saw three yellow cards, a sending off and a goal line technology decision saw the Australian referee at his very best.
As I’ve mentioned before, Gillett has a quiet, natural authority and a presence on the field borne out of great experience at a very high level. His decision making is very sound and the players hardly seem to quibble with him, which indicates great respect for his ability.
The yellow cards were nailed on, as was the red for a second yellow. Good teamwork to spot the first offence by Mansfield’s Hawkins who then stupidly flew into a tackle in midfield with little hope of getting the ball. Quick, clear decision by Gillett and one nobody complained about.
In the second half, two Port Vale goals disallowed for offside, and both good decisions by AR Neil Davies. The second half was again straightforwardly and competently refereed and Port Vale ran out easy 3-0 winners. Mansfield can have no complaints with the score, or the referee come to that.
A top first season in the top flight for Jarred Gillett and this performance was the hallmark of why he’s so highly rated. He will kick on next year and get many more top matches. A pleasure to watch him in action.
