L1 & 2 Play Offs
« on: Wed 19 May 2021 07:22 »
With the first day of L1 & 2 Play Offs completed what were people’s thoughts?

Personally I thought it was a very strong start from the referees. I thought Madley was excellent and showed his experience throughout, didn’t buy into giving cheap yellow cards and the yellow card after 3 minutes when Oxford called for a DOGSO was spot on. Always seemed the calmest on the pitch and was in total control - the respect from the players was quite evident.

Mr Breakspear similarly was very good in my opinion. I see this is his third consecutive run in the play offs which shows he is up there each year. Good movement, no controversies and a good start from these two officials. I am sure Mike Jones will be happy with the start made by his two referee teams so far

I didn't see the Oxford game, although I did turn it on with 30 seconds to go with them 3-0 down and chuckled heartily as Karl Robinson was watching from the stands....

Charles was excellent in the Newport game - he is the best National List referee in my opinion.  Would have been very easy to give a 'safe' defensive free-kick in the build up to the first Newport goal but he quite correctly ruled no foul had taken place.

Lincoln City v Sunderland - Craig Hicks

Yet another fine performance. Mr Hicks looked very calm and assured throughout and with the exception of the odd goal kick/corner decision I don’t remember disagreeing with too much.
The big talking point of the night of course was Lincoln’s second goal. With the attacker charging down the keeper and thus gaining control when the ball was kicked at him he rolled it into an empty net.
Inconclusive on most angles as to where it struck the player but one angle behind the goal showed that it clearly struck the attackers hand/arm.

Now I’m pretty sure the modern laws are that the goal should have therefore been disallowed and will have to go down as a wrong KMI, but I really don’t think any referee could have seen what part of the body it hit so I don’t feel there is any blame attached here to Mr Hicks. I am sure VAR would have spilt their coffee in excitement of ruling this out but not with the naked eye.

So three play offs down in L1 & L2 and three top class performances. Tonight is the turn of Mr Drysdale

I though Hicks was excellent also - he’s clearly had an impressive season, and based on last nights performance I think he looks more than ready for SG2!!!

Agree! Very borderline incident but especially in the bigger picture (managing the event etc.), Madley took the right call - SPA.

Thanks very much for these reports - if I wasn't so busy, then I would try to watch every game myself!

I have to agree with the above posts, Madley showed all of his experience to perform well in the Oxford game followed up by two impressive performances from two referees who seem to have improved significantly in recent times.  Hopefully the good showings continue for the remaining L1/2 games.

Did Drysdale have a good game this evening? If there were any particularly interesting (KMI) scenes let me know, with the minute, and I can cut clips :)

I didn’t get chance to see the game but I did see a handball in the build up the the second Morecambe goal on 45 minutes. It’s only really clear from behind the goal, an angle he doesn’t have of course, so again whilst it may be a mistake it’s not one that you would expect the referee to get right due to the fact he likely couldn’t see it from his expected position

I really do hope he moves into SG2.

The angle I saw suggested contact was more around the shoulder/upper chest area, although other Rovers fans who either were at the game or saw different footage did feel there was a handball. Agreed that it wouldn't have been clear from Mr Drysdale's position, which was where you'd expect him to be.

Overall I felt he did ok. Perhaps should have clamped down more on some cynical time-wasting play from Morecambe in the second half, though he did add 8 minutes at the end.

One question I wonder is how different would the playoffs be with VAR, I’m not a fan of how it’s actually been applied far to inconsistent but I believe at least 1 tie would have been decided differently and potentially a 2nd could be decided by the lack of it.

The first being Sunderland v Lincoln I may be slightly biased but the clear on the replay not in real time handball in the 1st leg and what I believe should have been a penalty in the 1st half today after the keeper brings down the striker.
