Kevin Friend/Simon Hooper - Newcastle v West Ham

Top spot from Simon Hooper to give West Ham a penalty. Decent performance from Kevin Friend despite my anger towards him midweek...

Here is a question I have always wondered about that somebody may know the answer to...

Dawson was given a second yellow card for a foul in the build up to the Newcastle goal. Kevin Friend played advantage and this obviously lead to the Newcastle goal before going back and giving Dawson his second yellow.

What would have happened if Dawson had recovered and say cleared the shot off the line or made a goal saving tackle when technically he should not have been on the pitch?

It was the case and may still be that you cannot play advantage for a sending off offence e.g. second yellow unless there is a clear goal scoring opportunity. Therefore the scenario you describe is unlikely. I did not see the game but I gather it was a clear goal scoring opportunity. Like he scored.

It would be an indirect free kick had Dawson played the ball or challenged an opponent, as per this from law 12 ...

Advantage should not be applied in situations involving serious foul play, violent conduct or a second cautionable offence unless there is a clear opportunity to score a goal. The referee must send off the player when the ball is next out of play, but if the player plays the ball or challenges/interferes with an opponent, the referee will stop play, send off the player and restart with an indirect free kick, unless the player committed a more serious offence.

I have not seen the game so apologies if I'm getting the wrong end of the stick but could somebody clear something up for me please. If Dawson was shown a second yellow after the referee had played advantage, I was under the impression a second yellow couldn't be shown.
I'm going off an incident in the Cardiff v Swansea game before Christmas and the referee in that game (John Brooks) said he couldn't show a second yellow because he had played advantage. I've copied the link from that game with what Brooks had told Neil Harris.

If advantage was played for an offence that prevented a promising attack the referee cannot go back and caution.  If it was for any other offence, which in all likelihood is going to be a reckless challenge, the caution can still be issued after advantage.  Dawson's challenge was more than reckless, so it was absolutely right go back and send off.

I also think Hooper has been one of the steadier refs this term too! Really pleased for him as he has struggled for the past couple of seasons but he finally seems to be finding his feet!

It was very much a reckless challenge and almost a carbon copy of his first caution.  (As in:  "Those who do not learn the lessons of history are condemned to repeat them").

It was also a very brave piece of refereeing.  You could see (from the reply) the whistle went to his mouth and he was fighting the urge to blow because he know it was a sending off - but he managed to hold off long enough for the advantage to develop and for a goal to ensue.  Although the goal itself was more down to the comic West Ham defending - but Friend allowed play to develop and for the comedy to play out.

He'll be very pleased watching that back.  As will the EFL referee (apologies - I cannot remember the game or the referee) who appears to have played two advantages that led to goals yesterday.  I was half-watching Goals on Sunday and just saw the (double handed) and very enthusiastic advantage signal as both goals hit the back of the net.  Isn't it strange that advantages that lead to goals are generally signalled with gusto and for some time?  Not quite Mike Reed with his fist pump, but getting there!

Leggy - the injury prone James Adcock at Harrogate v Bradford. That will have done his confidence some good!

According to irishref, Friend should have been sacked last week but this week he’s been brilliant.

Anybody else think Irishref made a mistake last week and by his own standards should be sacked from this website
