Kevin Friend, Southampton v Everton
« on: Mon 26 Oct 2020 09:44 »
I have noted in today's Times that the Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti has claimed that referee Kevin Friend "may have been influenced by the acrimonious fallout from last week's Merseyside derby when he made the 'joke' decision to send off Lucas Digne yesterday".

I have not yet seen the incident in question, so cannot comment on whether he is justified in calling it a 'joke' decision (? presumably reviewed by the VAR). However I do deplore the suggestion of influence in a referee's decision. I have a lot of time for Carlo who I think is a very good manager, but not on this occasion. Where is the evidence? In my view, there is no justification whatsoever for comments of this sort in the national press.

It was a foul. It endangered the safety of an opponent - a rake down the back of the heels. Looked nasty. Whether it was deliberate, an attempt to bring down the player I cannot really say but it was one of those where a player gets directly in front of another, perhaps the one in front slows down and there is a convenient "tangle of legs".  Note that the tackler had previously lost the ball and was trying to have another go. Jamie Rednapp slammed the decision saying it happens in football all the time (IMHO it doesn't). I just cannot be sure about the decision and would like to hear what other experts think - it was a foul and dangerous.
Carlo out of order. No evidence, questioning integrity etc. FA charge should follow.

For me, it was a definite RC, accidental or otherwise. In my opinion, Mr. Ancelotti is talking rubbish.

I agree Seagull - I thought Friend got it spot on. Dangerous challenge - the type of which often goes under punished IMO. Well done Mr Friend!

Modern game moving nearer and nearer to non-contact. Lose the ball, don't try to get it back just let the player run away and when you are running don't ever dare to put your foot on the pitch, learn to fly because you may accidentally step on someone and endanger him so much that he wouldn't manage to play on for another 24 minutes without problem.

I agree with Frank Lampard, it used to happen in 1962 when I started playing at senior level and it will continue to happen when players are chasing players, in fact, there were aat least four other instances in that one game where a player stood on another.

I wonder how one of Southampton's past players would have looked at that incident. Brian O'Neill, the Bedlington Terrier, would be a marked man these days, he was as hard as nails and a tough cookie but played hard and fair. He wouldn't survive 5 minutes in the modern PL, along with Stuart Pearce, Jaap Stam, Patrick Viera, Roy Keane et al.
Referee's decision used to be final!

If it wasn't a straight RC it was two yellows as both his first challenge (advantage played) and his second challenge were two of the clearest yellow cards of all time.

This is Dermot Gallagher's view on Sky Sports. "I think you've got to give a red card for that. I've spoken to a lot of people who think otherwise but when you put your studs down somebody's Achilles you are always going to be sent off for serious foul play. I fully accept he didn't mean to do it and he didn't mean to be malicious, but there are a lot of tackles that players make that are not meant to be, that are mistimed and clumsy and they get sent off."

I think that says it all and confirms our opinions.

Really struggling to see how there can be any complaints.  Even if it was accidental, and I'm far from convinced it was, there can be no argument whatsoever that it endangered the opponent.

It was never going to be a RC decision for which VAR would recommend a review on the monitor. Red seemed a reasonable decision to me. Not sure if VAR would have intervened had Friend gone Yellow.

Interesting though that Hackett & Halsey who usually are at one on these debates had different opinions if I understood their respective twitter posts correctly.
Halsey said Red for endangering an opponent while Hackett thought the foul reckless and therefore only a YC.

I suspect we've all seen worse, or even far worse, that have been sanctioned more leniently, and it's that inconsistency that is so annoying.

Couldn't agree more. Clumsy it may have been, but at that level, players should know and do better. Red card 100%. Ashington46 - Brian O'Neill may have been 'hard but fair' but Digne was certainly not 'fair' with his raking challenge, and I for one applaud the successful moves by the authorities to clean up the game after (as an example) the 1970 FA Cup Final Replay. If Kevin Friend had issued a yellow card instead of red, would VAR have intervened? I jolly well hope so, and I can think of a similar example at Selhurst Park (can't remember the opponents) where yellow became red following the intervention of the VAR.

I’m interested in peoples thoughts that Digne has had his ban reduced from three matches to one match

I have to say that I'm puzzled. If a sending off is appealed, I thought it was a case of it being proved or not proved, i.e. the player was either guilty or not guilty of Serious Foul Play in this instance and the ban would remain or be lifted. This seems to be a halfway house/grey area decision. I could understand if the sending off had been reduced to a caution but to uphold the sending off and reduce the standard punishment seems illogical to me.

Excuse me appearing gormless (nothing new there you may say)
I didn't see the game live.

Had Digne received a caution earlier in the game?  If so then downgrading the sanction for the challenge from RC to YC would have made it a second caution and a one game ban?

No, he wasn't cautioned earlier, Phil. It was a straight RC for SFP.
