K MONZUL - Andorra v England
« on: Sat 09 Oct 2021 20:30 »
So far so good…. Very very tight call for offside which VAR stepped in and overruled.

Very interesting to see that when Martinez and Stones were carded… no back chat at all to the officials and they accepted it and moved on…

Very refreshing to see….

However this game is very niggly to officiate.

Edit…. Sancho is losing the plot and not sure what happened in the tunnel area but it looked like there was the makings of a scuffle down there judging by the way the players and staff flew down there.

She seems quite overly fussy

Surely a higher profile referee could have managed the Sancho incident with a friendly word, did it really need a YC?

Sancho got what he deserved, as did Stones. They get away with all sorts in the PL every week and we moan on here because nothing is done. She did what she had to and good for her.
Referee's decision used to be final!

Doesn’t appear in control to me , not impressed .

I agree, i think all these niggly off the ball altercations is because she lacks the authority and control of the game.

Tell me more about how condescending you feel about a referee who has controlled a FIFA World Cup Final and who was voted best referee in their nation’s Mens Premier League last year…

Actually - come back to me when you’ve referred ANY final at the top domestic level - then maybe I’ll take you semi seriously

Agree. Andorra No 4 should have just had a second yellow.

Mixed bag tonight, definetly should have given a second yellow card to Andorra player

20 fouls by Andorra but only 2 YC, England committed 9 fouls and received 3 YC

I wasn’t aware she was voted Ukrainian referee of the year in 2020 and had done the Women’s World Cup final; by that I’d have expected more from this evening, in what should’ve been a fairly routine game to manage. I’d agree she lost control in the middle third of the game. I wouldn’t give better than a 5/10 taking into account the stature of the game.

She seemed to go from ultra picky to quite lenient. Some of the yellows should’ve been easily managed with a talking to, but then the most obvious of yellow cards wasn’t given. The inconsistency does irritate as a fan.

There also seemed to be countless offsides that were wrongly adjudged.

Good call by the VAR at the start.

Andorra played as Andorra did when they came to Wembley, slow, niggly, frustrating, as they have to against any side that is technically better.
I felt the referee spotted fouls but was a little naive in why they were happening. At no point did I feel she tried to prevent things, in the way a more experienced referee may have. I feel a yellow card after a series of fouls would have shown everyone that she had spotted what was going on.
Certainly the Andorra player (on a yellow) who deliberately jumped into Coady having looked at him, should have been dismissed - another example of not picking up the intention of the player. Ms Monzul will pick this up with the more international games she does. It is an observation based on her experience, not on her gender.
Needs to be more tactically aware.
Good overule by VAR on a tight offside.

Sancho kicked the ball away when Andirra got a free kick. Pretty slam-dunk, to be fair.

I hope it tasted alright.

Sorry but can we just say it please? She was poor!
It seems like because it’s a female official we have to tread on eggshells when saying she was poor for the hope of not being called sexist. Some incorrect yellow cards, a clear missed second yellow card, far too officious at times when that wasn’t necessary. Had this have been a male referee on their first outing there would have been many posts here saying they were naive, not ready for this level etc. if we are to have equality with female officials in the mens game which is a huge positive in my eyes, then the female referees must be held to the same critique and standard.

This performance tonight was not the standard one would expect of a referee in a UEFA WC Qualifying game involving one of the top seeds.

Andy Madley officiated Latvia v Netherlands yesterday evening. I caught the second half of this and saw the total opposite. A referee who was relaxed, smiled with players, didn’t panic and commanded the respect of the players.

Please can we just hold all officials to the same standard and not skirt around being able to say a performance by a referee, male or female, was poor simply because of their gender.

The only caveat to put on Madley is that the Dutch FA have issued a complaint as one of their players has suffered concussion and the game wasnt stopped. I have not seen it so will not comment further.
