José María Sánchez Martínez - Aston Villa v PSG
« on: Tue 15 Apr 2025 21:59 »
Two major gripes with the officiating team this evening. No action taken against some pretty blatant time wasting by PSG players from goal kicks, throw ins and free kicks. Don’t get me wrong I understand they wanted to take the sting out of the game but I thought it went too far. And therefore my second gripe is with the amount of added time in each half. 1st Half - 3 goals and an incident between Hakimi and McGinn = 1 minute. 2nd Half - 2 goals, time wasting and substitutes = 3 minutes. Wasn’t an accurate reflection in my opinion.

Apart from that, I thought that Spaniard was decent throughout. Villa fans seemed unhappy at the amount of ‘soft’ fouls given to PSG but I think his hands were tied with most of them. One yellow to John McGinn which seemed correct. The only major mistake he made was awarding a free kick on Doue against Tielemans which wasn’t a foul. But he looked assured in what he was doing and done what he needed to do.

Credit to Aston Villa who put up an incredible fight after going 2-0 down on the night and 4 down on aggregate. Arguably had the chances to take it to extra time as well. A cracking 90 minutes of football

agree with your summary - (lack of) added time in uefa games is a huge issue imo and allows teams to waste copious amounts of time without significant action.

the free kick you mention really annoyed me, was a really poor decision, one was couldnt have been better placed to make

Barring injuries , in UEFA competitions you generally get 0-1 minute added on at end of first half , and usually 3 minutes added on at end of second half , thats what I have noticed for as long as I can remember

I agree with the added time. Something that has become a real issue in UEFA games. If they resort back to World Cup added time, then there would be a lot less time wasting. I also don’t see why they didn’t do it at the euros either - what’s the point for just one tournament?
Now something I did see, on tik tok, was when the officials were walking off, a bottle got thrown at Mr Martinez by an Aston Villa supporter. No one condones this behaviour and I hope the person is banned. I’ll put a link to the tik tok below:

Fantastic game, great atmosphere.
The added time at the end of each half was unfathomable.
At the end of the first half the referee spoke with PSG goalkeeper to get him to hurry up and then blew up as soon as he took the goal kick so didnt add amy time.
Three minutes added probably should have been double that at the end of the second half.
Cant comment too much on the overall performance of the referee as like the future king i got to wrapped in the game.

Was always a difficult tie to win when conceding two early goals from sloppy mistakes which were finished clinically but to get so close and have one of the favourites under the cosh and panicking for the first 30 mins of the second half was impressive.

I wonder who played the europa league theme instead of the champions league theme as the players lined up…..sackable offence ?

Lastly i hope the fan who threw the bottle at the referee gets a lifetime ban, it would be appropriate to get a short custodial sentence too. Such events reflect extremely badly on the club and the loyal well behaved fans.

Echo the thoughts on the added time, especially 2nd half, can only guess he had a flight to catch!

3 minutes was a complete joke, given all the subs, injuries and time wasting.

A fantastic effort by Aston Villa. I have the greatest respect for Unai Emery though sadly I can't extend that to the GK Martinez who always seems to push gamesmanship to its limits. He might now be reflecting on the truth of the old adage 'what goes round comes around'. The referee had a decent game I thought in a pretty fired up Villa Park though the paucity of added on time is perplexing.
