Well this is interesting.

If you could encapsulate everything that is wrong with football, this is truly it.

Was it a penalty? Absolutely not. No-one will be more devastated by that than John, particularly as it comes at the end of an outstanding season for him.

So what caused this? One thing. I can’t use the C-word (no, not that one) as I know the moderators aren’t fond of it. But that’s what it is. Sammie Szomdics has deliberately gone to ground, knowing he hasn’t been contacted, in a last ditch attempt to get the point needed for Peterborough to go up, an attempt which has ultimately been successful. Look at his reaction as he sits on the floor when the referee blows his whistle. Disgusting.

John has one look at that, at full speed, from one angle, in a pressure cooker environment.

And yet, the original creator of this thread, and most of the subsequent posters, blame the referee and not the player.

When the public and media wake up and realise that - unlike pretty much any other sport - football has an ‘end justifies the means’ mentality then we might have something to be proud of. Until then, we should all be thoroughly ashamed of the sport we love.

I am a neutral, but how that was a penalty is frankly beyond me. I strongly suspect that there may be some serious regrets about that decision from Mr Busby when he reconsiders it.

I agree it was a shocking decision.  Hardly a surprise though, given the standard in leagues 1 & 2.  As for regrets, I wouldn't count on it.  In my experience many referees will simply refuse to accept they made an error and justify their decision.  Or alternatively just dismiss it, forget it and move on without a backward glance.

Whilst I agree with your comment about the player deliberately going to ground(and hopefully he'll be banned) John Busby is looking straight at the incident and if he was going to blow for anything it should have been a foul on the Lincoln defender. Obviously you are entitled to your opinion on the matter and i respect that but nothing can gloss over the fact that this was a shocking decision with major consequences. Mike Jones has apparently issued an apology which probably does nothing more than rub salt in the wounds so maybe that's a practice that should be stopped.

Yfc54 - if Jones doesn't come out and apologise won't they just be accused of ignorance or sweeping things under the carpet?
Apologising acknowledges an error was made, for whatever reason and they are addressing that with the referee.
Only Mr Busby will "know" what he saw

Whilst accepting it was a high profile game, how will officials cope when crowds are back, if pressure was a contributory factor?

Wasn't my intention to gloss over anything, so apologies if it came across that way.

My point is that the root cause of this error was the player attempting to deceive a match official, a attempt that succeeded, yet the referee gets the vast majority of the flak!  Football needs to wake up.

Indeed - who was the last player to be given a 2 match ban for simulation?

Agree totally. Never understand why an honest mistake gets far more criticism than the dishonest act of the player. I guess because there is a general acceptance that players will act dishonestly...

Have only seen this incident once and I agree it was a deliberate attempt to deceive the referee for which I have no truck whatsoever.  I would have hoped the FA would take action against the player but a forlorn hope at that.

However, there will be some incidents where one can fully understand how the referee came to be deceived and others where a referee has been deceived too easily.  To me this looked like the latter, and in those circumstances, I don't see why a referee should escape legitimate criticism. This is not to absolve the player, who was primarily responsible, in any way, but while I accept that Mr Busby made an honest mistake, such mistakes can be costly in terms of promotion and relegation for Clubs and players at a crucial part of the season.

I feel sympathy for the referee who must be mortified at his mistake and hope he recovers mentally very quickly.  He seems to be highly rated and it would be a pity if it held back his promotion prospects.  He would be in good company - in that Michael Oliver interview in the Mail, he acknowledged a mistake in giving a penalty and a RC for an incident outside the box which wasn't a foul anyway in a FL game, and which he reckoned delayed his promotion another year.  Some might say he still awards penalties rather too easily on occasions, but that incident over 10 years ago hasn't affected his career too much so good luck Mr Busby.

An excellent and very sensible post.  The only point I would add is Lincoln will have played 45 games aside from this one.  If I had the time and the inclination to go through them, I guarantee you I could find many more examples where their own mistakes have cost themselves points.  The only reason this mistake from John is highlighted so intensely is because we are at the 'business' end of the season.

It's got to be a fair while back.  My guess would be Francis Lee!

I feel for John here massively, he has officiated Posh v Hull (1st v 2nd) and Posh v Lincoln this season (2nd v 3rd) and until the 95th minute in the Lincoln match has been excellent. He unfortunately made a genuine honest mistake.

I do feel for all National List referees at this stage of the season, they all hold down full time jobs as well as officiating. We have heard managers in League one and League Two complain about the schedule times after time this season (more midweek games etc). The National League referees have had to balance this schedule as well as hold down other jobs. We don't know the personal circumstances of the referees and they have may also had personal issues during this time eg furlough, job loses etc. I am sure fatigue and tiredness must be playing a part in decision making at this stage of the season.
