Jarred Gillett - Chelsea v Chesterfield

This is obviously a pointer as to how Gillett is rated as he was appointed to one of the Premier League’s top sides.

Not a difficult match to control in all honesty, but he sailed through it without much problem. An early caution for a Chelsea player set a good marker, he then cautioned a Chesterfield player for a late tackle from behind and thereafter, with Chelsea in control, Gillett didn’t have a great deal to do.

In the second half, an obvious penalty was given to Chelsea and throughout Gillett’s positioning was good, he gave quick, clear decisions and very few of the players argued with him. In fact, he has a good rapport with the players, with a quiet authority, and they seem to respect him, given his experience as an international referee in his native Australia.

As I said, he will have more testing games involving the top Premier League sides in regular League play, but the fact he has been a VAR in two very important matches in the last week (including a semi final in the EFL Cup), means that Jarred Gillett’s stock is certainly rising in the world of Select Group 1.
