J GILLETT - Spurs v Newcastle

No foul for me when Wilson and Lloris collided with each other. Just looked like a simple coming together and the keeper made a meal of it IMO.

Correct decision for VAR to uphold the goal. Bentacur carded for mouthing off at the officials.

No obvious error imho. It would be an error not to report Spurs players for surrounding the referee but this appears to be acceptable. I understand Spurs frustration but they should look at their own performance. Of course they will now win 3-2...

Lloris made a complete meal of that, Tom Daley would be proud of that dive.

Gillet had a great view not sure there would have been enough to overturn that

So far so good from Gillett - spot on decision to allow first Newcastle goal and glad VAR agreed.

The one thing that has let Mr Gillet down today is his failure to clamp down on time wasting at set pieces and goal kicks

He's far from being alone on that - very few referees clamp down on it.  Gillett did make an effort towards the end, when it was really blatant, but should have started earlier.  Two handball calls which, in my opinion, were both called correctly due to proximity, though we've seen them given by other referees (especially the first one).

Just seen the opening Newcastle goal on the highlights. No foul, appalling piece of goalkeeping. Wilson just stood his ground and Lloris ran into him. Should never have got out of it with the goal being chalked off and thankfully, the officials didn’t overrule it. The initial call was correct and backed by Attwell in the VAR booth.

Then we had the unseemly and regular display of dissent and mass protestations, but the Spurs’ players knew that the keeper had goofed and Gillett dealt with the dissent, as he should do.

As far as time wasting is concerned, until an independent time keeper is appointed as in rugby union, we will still have these discussions about time wasting. Until ALL referees at the top level clamp down on it, it will continue to be a blight on the game.

I didn't realise that Gillett was refereeing ---- I thought that it was Harry Kane ---how misguided am I?
Referee's decision used to be final!

I had to check the BBC website to see if Kane was supposed to be playing

Once again, IFAB have unfortunately failed to make any progress towards independent timekeeping so the issue will continue to persist.

It was suggested the PL wanted to try and increase playing time this season. I'm not sure if there are any stats on whether or not this has happened so far compared to recent seasons?

There was a debate about the Spurs goal over whether Sanchez had played the ball but was apparently inconclusive from teh camera angles. Would the new semi-automated thing be any better at dealing with such incidents?

I know there were a couple of instances of players surrounding the referee in this one but both times once the captain got there they dispersed them - Kane did it at the disallowed goal and Trippier did it when they were claiming for a penalty.

Thought Gillett was very good overall, actually was very impressed with all three refs I saw on Sky today.

I could be wrong, but I do not think it will.  It will improve the identification of whether a player is in an offside position at any given point in time, but will it address the "did they touch the ball" question?

Glad to see a referee have the bottle not to protect a goalkeeper when no protection was necessary.
