J GILLETT: S'TON V WOLVES

Excellent to see Lemina get a second yellow for dissent towards Jarred, something we don't see very often so glad to see.

Good so far from team ref, very heated game and Jarred has handled it well.

Haven’t seen the incident concerned but it seems the dismissed player has only himself to blame.

Good to hear that Jarred Gillett has taken this action and I only wish some of his erstwhile colleagues would follow his lead and take strong action on a growing problem within the game that seeps down to more humble levels.

Also I would add that Gillett was given this game between two teams near the bottom of the table to test his capabilities…..as usual he’s up to the job.

This game needed a strong referee. Today I saw a referee who was strong, decisive referee who used his no nonsense approach to give a masterclass. You can tell he understands the game as well. Perfection!

Commenting on the incident only, as I haven’t seen the full extended highlights or the game as a whole. On the basis of that incident alone, I think “perfection” is over the top.

I think there is a foul (holding) on Lemina in the build up which hasn’t been penalised.

Regardless of that, Lemina’s reaction is not acceptable and I agree with the sentiment of it being strong refereeing and good to see that a referee will not shirk dismissing a player for a second caution on account of dissent. However, I think the actions of the Wolves 8 (captain - Neves) are more extreme than that of Lemina in this incident and I’m not sure how necessary it was to pick Lemina for the YC (or at least not also caution Neves).

Can’t criticise the referee for the 2nd YC, but there are points to reflect on.

Perhaps Lemina said something

Mail reports that he was booked for running aggressively towards the referee. A new one for me but perhaps understandable and why he was singled out. Mind you, it is in the Mail....

Well the  Wolves captain said Lemina said nothing at all.

I am with the MOTD panel when they say the dismissal was extremely harsh to say the least.

The referee could have made his point by booking one of the others who weren't on a yellow. However, he appears to have turned around after the others approached him and so perhaps saw one individual. What was said, if anything, or the facial expression used may have influenced his choice of player.
In the event, Wolves won and a decent man has lost his job. And the referee was not responsible for that. He had a good game by all accounts, I like his style and players on yellow cards need to be smarter.

He must have said something, there is no way a Premier League referee is sending off for someone just running towards him.  You can't read anything into what the Wolves captain said.

I like Gillett - his experience comes through, calm authority and generally spot on with his decisions. In no way saying he’s wrong (we can’t know) but a couple of observations:

Far from the most egregious example we’ve seen this season - I hope this is a sign refs have been instructed to clamp down on players running at them to protest. If they have, that’s great but it would help if Webb (or someone) makes this public. It’d receive lots of support and then people would have no sympathy. Also needs other refs to do their bit - media will quickly (and rightly) point to other examples, if other players don’t get the same treatment. Especially if ‘bigger’ clubs are seen to get away with it.

Good to see the same punishment issued to Dias of Man. City today by Mr Jones.
If refs are clamping down on people running from distance to have an opinion i am sure it will have been communicated to the clubs prior to the practice taking place.

Upon reflection and after reading other views both on Gillett and Jones it seems that I have been taken in by Messrs Liniker,Shearer and Murphy.

Happy to have been corrected.

I have no qualms at all about players seeing yellow for dissent, particularly on crowding the ref. A few weeks of yellows and reds for this would hopefully go some way to addressing players’ attitudes on this matter. What will never be clear to fans watching is why, in incidents like the Dias and Lemina bookings, one out of three players is singled out for a card.

The question I have is following comments made on Sky about the Dias booking. The commentators suggested that Dias was booked because there were already two players speaking with the ref and Dias was the third on the scene. They referenced that this was the same with Lemina.  Is this coincidence and the commentators putting 2 and 2 together and making 5? It feels odd that yellows would be issued based on whoever arrives at the referee third rather than the severity of the dissent.

In the two incidents, I could see why Dias was booked as he ran from some distance and got in Jones’ face whereas in the Lemina one, although he came from some distance, he didn’t look to sprint or be particularly vocal from the footage I’ve seen. Neves and the other Wolves player certainly looked to be worse offenders in terms of dissent towards Gillett in all respects other than they were nearer when they started speaking to him.

The thing with dissent is we don't hear what is said. Someone could be yelling but still be polite in terms of language used whereas someone else could stand there looking all calm & very quietly say 'you're a cheat ref' - to anyone looking on you'd assume the shouty one should be given yellow not the quiet one.
