Gillingham beat Crewe 2-1 last night but brought on 5 subs using 4 windows (no subs at half time). Into injury time they had made 3 subs using 2 windows and tried to make a double sub. However, one of them wasn't quite ready and so they just made one sub, taking them to 4 subs from 3 windows. They then made another change, bringing on the player they'd tried to bring on just before. This took them to 5 subs from 4 windows.

There is little chance that this affected the outcome, as the final whistle blew about 90 seconds later. What do you guys think the FA would do about this if Crewe were to appeal?

Welcome to RTR and congratulations of your impending promotion to SG1!

One would have thought the 4th official should have intervened. This one definitely went under the radar but will be interesting to see if anything comes out of it.

I presume there was no possibility of any concussion subs being made in the game?

It will be interesting what comes of it if an error has been made.

Welcome to the growing ranks of Railwaymen on RTR. We number at least ..... three now and new members always welcome. Award the points to Crewe I say, but seriously I don't think anything will come of it, although.... look what happened in added time in the recent Crewe v Salford game.

I was there last night, he had the board with the numbers all ready to go to do that 5th sub but the ref wouldn’t let it happen

So a gold star to referee James Oldham and the naughty step for 4O Paul Kelly perhaps?

I suspect that the refereeing team will be marked down for failing to correctly apply the Laws of the Game, but doubt if the result of the game will be impacted.

It does raise an interesting point.  We have always been taught that - if a substitute is not ready to enter the field of play - not to hold up the game and to execute the substition at the next break in play (assuming the sub is finally ready!).  In this case, this was the last "window".  Do we:
i)  Hold up the game until he is ready?
ii) Restart the game and - as all of the "windows" have been used - refuse to allow the substitution?
iii) Allow an additional "window"?

Funny enough he’s from Chatham, not far from Gillingham

I don't think that the referee could allow an additional 'window', rules are rules. however good or bad they may be. I suggest a word in management's ear from the referee or 4O might be best, in other words, get your last sub on p.d.q. or they won't come on at all.

If 4 sub windows were used, and that isn't clear as one says it happened and another says they tried but the referee wouldn't allow it, then that is an incorrect in law situation.  That's no different to messing up a penalty restart after encroachment, playing extra time when you shouldn't or vice versa, and if there was a complaint then realistically it would have to be replayed and all 4 officials would be charged and likely suspended.
