According to an article in yesterdays I Paper 'We're running out of referees because of the abuse that they take' - 'desensitisation of referee abuse' is turning young officials away from the job so that 'the pool of new referees coming into the game is almost dry'
Very sad and disturbing if true
Is this really the true picture?

I have no idea of how true this is - those who are active at grass roots level will be better placed to comment.

If, however, this is true can it be at all surprising - given how referees have been (not) supported over the past 10/15 years.  Pretty much ever since the oxymoronically titled Respect campaign was launched.
