About time they announced it, we've all known since June! Hope to see the openness and transparency he showed in the USA implemented here.

Good to have it confirmed. Plenty for him to do but his track record in MLS at least seems promising from the outside. The release of VAR audio like Inside Review in MLS is an urgent must.

This is brilliant news and is an announcement that most of us have expected for a while now. Hopefully refereeing and VAR standards will improve under his leadership.

A much more suitable candidate for this role than his predecessor in every way.  Hopefully, this will lead to more transparency from PGMOL and improvement with the implementation of VAR.

I doubt it will be anyone from a refereeing, or even football background.

I hope Mr Cann is involved in his regime too…. Webb, Cann and Mullarkey all together again isn’t a bad trio to have on board!

Does anyone have any further details of the Elite Referee Development Plan?

The powers that be keep mentioning it but there seems to be nothing concrete in terms of what has been publicised.

I am pretty certain that the ERDP has started because Riley was recently interviewed at a game, of which he was watching a 2B referee who was a part of the plan.

An appointment to be welcomed, but with a word of caution.  HW will have to work within the confines set by the PGMOLs "Stakeholders" - The Premier League, the Football League and the FA.  These are the bodies paying the piper, so they get to call the tune.

HW may well find that he is operating within more of a straight-jacket than was the case with his current, and previous, employers.

I sincerely hope he has the courage and the "licence" allow his referees to officiate the games without fear or favour and attack some of the cancerous elements we see weekly.  The game will be a better spectacle for it.

The post above 👆 echos the only problem. His got to try to please so many different people and elements.
If he stamps his foot and says my way or no way then we might have a decent appointment here, or it will be a disaster and we won’t have moved forward.

I would like him to impose from the off:

* inside video review - his great YouTube channel which his assistant Greg Barkley does after every round of MLS games it allows fans to hear the VAR and match referee chat during a decision, this is great for educational purposes for fans, PRO then give there view on it as well.

* Get rid of clear and obvious- referee games as is what is put in front of the match officials.

* Stronger Officiating - refs who are scared to make unpopular big decisions in a game.

Only IFAB can do that.

What is true is that HW's bargaining stock will never be higher than it is at the start of his tenure.  If he sets out his stall now and says this is the way I am going to do the job, he will either be accepted (and can make a real difference) or he can resign (or be sacked?).  That would be a real story.  If he waits six / twelve / eighteen months and tries to make changes any subsequent departure will barely create a ripple.

A bit like a referee setting their standard early in a game - much easier to do than recover later on after it has all gone t*ts up.

The "clear and obvious" to me creates a problem - if another referee says there is a clear and obvious error there seems little point in having the screens for the on field referee to look at.  If on the other hand they were to say "an element of doubt" then the referee looking at the screen would seem to be given more discretion than at present.  I have never had a great deal of confidence in IFAB.
