Geoff Eltringham - St Andrew's
« on: Sun 11 Apr 2021 10:54 »
Just spotted that Geoff Eltringham has refereed Coventry v Bristol City and Birmingham v Stoke this week, both at St Andrew's.

I wonder if that's happened before - a ref going to the same ground in consecutive games.

I recall Kevin Friend doing two consecutive Manchester City home matches quite recently, but what about anyone else?

To add further to the coincidences, Eltringham refereed Birmingham v Coventry in January!

Much lower level but I once did Banstead Athletic in the Isthmian leage of the Saturday and returned to the same ground on the Tuesday to referee their tenants, Epsom & Ewell.

Also, as a result of a late cry-off, I was fourth official at two consecutive Maidstone United football league games over Christmas.

Both were a long time ago!

On a similar theme, on Monday 28th December 1998, Roger Furnandiz refereed Hartlepool v Rochdale as a replacement for David Laws.

And then, on Saturday 2nd January 1999, Roger Furnandiz refereed Darlington v Rochdale!

In 2017/18, two of Scott Oldham's final three appointments of the season were at Rochdale, the second of which (v Portsmouth) was as a last minute replacement for Andy Haines.

I'm sure there are more.

It did happen in days of yore-often a FA Cup match next to a League game.WJ Downey at Stockport in successive matches in 19? or was it 18?...........

In April 1969, Harry New refereed Palace's final promotion winning game at Selhurst Park v Fulham. Then he re-appeared at SP in August 1969 for Palace's first ever game in the top flight, v Man Utd. I believe the same happened more recently with Andy D'Urso but I cannot remember the circumstances.

Kevin Friend also took charge of consecutive Norwich home matches in the Premier League at the end of last season.

I suppose there might have been other examples of consecutive visits when Wimbledon were ground sharing at Selhurst Park.

Last season I was appointed to games in consecutive weeks at Histon, one of them being for their tenants Cambridge City, although one of the matches was subsequently called off due to the weather.  My son was appointed to the game there the next week.

Actually, that reminds me:

6/12/86 Rochdale v Wrexham (FA Cup): John Key
26/12/86 Rochdale v Tranmere: John Key

I'm sure he would have had another game in-between, but that's not a million miles off.

Nottingham’s Reg Leafe, my favourite referee of all time, refereed Blackburn Rovers v West Ham at Ewood Park on February 21 1959. Two days later he was in charge of the F A Cup second replay between Bolton Wanderers and Preston North End, also at Ewood Park.
