Gareth Southgate
« on: Fri 17 Mar 2023 16:19 »
Sad report from Mr Southgate in todays news where he says he is increasingly worried about the decreaing number of English players in the Premier League - he quotes onlty 32% of players are eligiable for England selection and the numbers are going down
I have long thought that there should be a limit of foreign players allowed for clubs - there is so much money now involved this is extremely unlikely to happen (as I believe used to be the case -but I may be wrong)
The same applies to managers
Let's hope any pressure to import foreign referees continues to be opposed
I have nothing against any person from another country indeed some of my best friends have come from non uk people
Just thinking about the state of our national game

Not really sure I understand Southgate's concerns, England haven't had it so good with young English players players regularly playing in the top level for a long, long time.  Plus we now have the likes of Bellingham, Sanchez, Tomori, Maduke, etc, who have gone overseas at a young age and nailed it, that certainly has never happened before.

The fact he chooses to keep picking the likes of Maguire and Phillips despite them not playing club football doesn't mean the system is broke, it just means that he is being safe / loyal.

I always worry when I see the "some of my best friends are" phrase.

Totally agree with you, Maguire should not be in the squad yet gets picked and someone like Tomori who should be in isn't because he is picking the likes of Maguire, to an extent Pickford I would have him in but I certainly wouldn't have him number one when Ramsdale and Pope have both been better than Pickford this season and have both kept more clean sheets than him

I feel Mr Southgate has something of a blind spot when it comes to players playing in leagues other than the Premier League, Bellingham excepted.
