I agree but I would say Karasev instead of Soares Dias  , because Karasev seems to be back in favour and having a great season

Based on what we've seen from UEFA appointments, I imagine it would be Taylor rather than Oliver although I'm sure there would be mixed views on here about that.  Spain will surely have a referee at the WC but I would be disappointed if del Cerro Grande was there and not Oliver.  I would have thought that despite the Euros, it would more likely be Lahoz.

I agree that Karasev will probably be there and it may well come down to Marciniak or Hategan for the final place.  But then of course, there's politics.

I've always thought Oliver was slightly ahead of Taylor at FIFA. Oliver seems to have had slightly better Champions League appointments this season and did a QF at the Euros.

Were Cakir, Lahoz and Orsato left off the initial long list? Maybe due to age? I wasn't sure if they'd go.

Marciniak seems to have recovered a bit in recent months after a difficult few years. I really rated him around 2016/17 so I hope he performs at the level for him to go.

Does FIFA make this selection or UEFA? I’d predict

Anthony Taylor 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
Clément Turpin 🇨🇵
Daniel Siebert 🇩🇪
Daniele Orsato 🇮🇹

Cuneyt Çakır 🇹🇷

If Collina is the one making the choice rather than UEFA I would guess this might help the cause of Cakir and also possibly Oliver who IIRC was given some good appointments by Collina.

I believe its Fifa's decision, theres definately plenty of competition for places this time around which is always healthy to see, apart from Germany where it seems Siebert is a dead cert, Same with Holland and Makkelie.
Spain is very competitive with three candidates there, my personal preference would be Lahoz, But It wouldn't shock me if its Del Cerro Grande. France have got two nominees surprisingly, Turpin is surely nailed on however.

I think its gonna be very tight between Oliver And Taylor, Though if I had to guess at which one would go, I'd Say Taylor.

Daniel Siebert 🇩🇪
Ovidiu Hațegan 🇷🇴 - I would prefer Istvan Kovacs 🇷🇴 he's a better all round referee than Hațegan but is less established at the moment. I think he will maybe go as one of the 4th officials but then go to the next Euros.

Political shenanigans will probably revolve around the nationalities of the "chosen 10" (I believe that will be UEFA's number for WC22 referees) and VARs.
Those 16 UEFA VARs in the frame are apparently
Stuart Attwell (ENG) ;
Willy Delajod (FRA) ; Benoit Millot (FRA)
Bastian Dankert (GER) ; Marco Fritz (GER)
Marco Di Bello (ITA) ; Marco Guida (ITA) ; Massimiliano Irrati (ITA) ; Paolo Valeri (ITA)
Jochem Kamphuis (NED) ; Pol van Boekel (NED)
Tomasz Kwiatkowski (POL)
Joao Pedro Silva Pinheiro (POR)
Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea (ESP) ; Alejandro José Hernández Hernández (ESP) ; Juan Martínez Munuera (ESP)
So if it's 10 from 20 referees for UEFA, how many UEFA VARs will FIFA want?
Selection for Club World Cup in a WC year usually indicates those who have missed out on WC.

Hard to disagree with any of bmb's picks. If only one English referee goes then I think it will be Taylor though I am of the firm and unwavering opinion that it should be Oliver. I think there is clear blue water now between Oliver and Taylor in Oliver's favour but I don't think the nabobs of international refereeing share my undoubtedly correct view.

FIFA does the final selection. But it's not a secret that every Confederation has a say on the selection process.

My choices would be:

Anthony Taylor
Danny Makkelie
Clement Turpin
Daniele Orsato
Antonio Mateu Lahoz
Daniel Siebert
Sergei Karasev
Cuneyt Cakir
Ovidiu Hategan

Reserve Slavko Vincic

Thanks edy, would it be fair to say that it seems that FIFA/Collina favour Oliver over Taylor? Or maybe not enough information to tell. I wonder if UEFA have a lot of influence if Cakir could lose out over Vinic.

My recollection of the Euros was that Taylor & Oliver both had 2 Group stage games and Taylor had a round of 16 game, Oliver had a QF.

Taylor rightly won praise for his quick and calm handling of the serious Eriksen incident.  Both in my view had 2 very good performances and 1 that was ok in their 3 matches.

At one time, although I felt, and still do, that Oliver is a more natural referee, I could understand why in some European circles Taylor might be regarded as a safer pair of hands and that just maybe Oliver was slightly more prone to a KMI error.  I no longer consider that distinction is valid.  However, this could well be Taylor's only chance of a World Cup, whereas Oliver could still be available for two more after Qatar assuming he continues to ply his trade.

Aside from those comments, I think edy's choice could well be spot on.
