ESL protest at Old Trafford
« on: Sun 02 May 2021 14:52 »
Credit to the Utd fans who are staging a protest this afternoon against the Glazers.
An anticipated 10,000 are expected; police are warning that the M25 and M40 could be gridlocked! 🤪

You mean apart from breaking the law? Mass gatherings are illegal.

About 200 fans broke into the ground and on to the pitch before being cleared away. Vehicles were surrounded outside, including Michael Oliver's, but he and others subsequently made it into the ground without further ado (BBC).

Mass gatherings of this sort may be illegal but thousands of people in Liverpool have been attending events in the city this weekend, quite legally as part of a trial, and I suspect the protests at OT will be quietly overlooked.

Hendo - M25 and M40, gridlock that far south?

I can't see the game going ahead, seemingly the players aren't able to get out of their hotels.  This could have serious ramifications on Manchester United, not least how on earth do supporters get into a secure stadium where the players are due to arrive and the match officials are already there.  Seemingly they got into the tunnel and changing room areas, I suspect that would have been very uncomfortable for Michael Oliver and his team.

Man U are shockingly bad in terms of security.  The whole bomb scare debacle was proof of that. Quite obvious no checks had been done around the stadium in days because it had been sat there for nearly a week before being discovered by a supporter.  They tried to claim a full health & safety check was done after the police had used it for training and again pre match but as the training device was out in the open, that is a load of codswallop!!! Clearly they have not made any improvements as they were strongly advised at the time to do!

I think that now it's got to 5.30 they are going to need to postpone the match to another date.  The main issue here is that everyone needs to get home before 9.00pm in time for Line of Duty.

Just imagine, this game will have to be the last game of the season as there is nowhere to fit in the game elsewhere

Therefore fans will be at the game

Cue the drama
All opinions are my own

A significant points deduction must now follow. 15 at least I would suggest 🤔

Game postponed.  PL statement

“Following the security breach at Old Trafford, the Manchester United vs. Liverpool game has been postponed. This is a collective decision from the police, both clubs, the Premier League and local authorities.

“The security and safety of everyone at Old Trafford remains of paramount importance. We understand and respect the strength of feeling but condemn all acts of violence, criminal damage and trespass, especially given the associated COVID-19 breaches. Fans have many channels by which to make their views known, but the actions of a minority seen today have no justification.

“We sympathise with the police and stewards who had to deal with a dangerous situation that should have no place in football. The rearrangement of the fixture will be communicated in due course.”

I was getting nervous that a 7.30pm kick off would mean a conflict with Hastings, 'H' and Co. at 9pm.  Delighted the authorities have seen sense and postponed the game!

There is of course a serious side to this with important questions to be answered.

A dark day for football.

However the owners of these six clubs who’ve single-handedly caused this mess in the first place should be ashamed of themselves.

It will also bring into question whether these six clubs can allow fans back in, because god knows what would have happened if fans were back in the stadium legitimately.....

The right to peaceful protest is fine, outside the ground, full view of media, support from across the footballing world would have followed.
However, getting into stadium, onto pitch and into areas which are off limits on any matchday, questions both the mentality of the "fans" and the readiness of the club.
Also, I don't think preventing players leaving their hotels to do their job is right either. It has been shown the players knew nothing of the ESL.
