A 'newbie' for me to see last Saturday and the first time (I believe) that Peter Wright has been discussed since he came on to the FL.
A tall man, and looking a bit like David Coote, Peter quickly gave the impression that he wanted to adopt a hands-off approach to his refereeing, and this was not difficult in a first half that lacked any form of drama, with no cards, no added time and just one dubious tackle which Peter ignored. It was more like a PSF than a competitive match in L2. The second half started in much the same way and it said a lot for the quality of the game that the Crewe manager only got hot under the collar when a throw in was given to Grimsby rather than Crewe in midfield. As the chap behind me commented dryly, 'keep calm David, it's only a throw'. This was then followed by the most outrageous foul throw which Peter and his AR fortunately picked up on. Such was the excitement!
Fortunately Crewe enlivened the proceedings by scoring a great goal quickly followed by another, to which Grimsby never looked like responding.
Quiet, unhurried, almost studious, that is how I would describe Peter Wright's refereeing and fortunately in this match it worked. He will no doubt have greater challenges in the future, but I think he can be pleased with his afternoon's work, aided in no small way by two decent ARs. Now for Mr Sarginson tomorrow night
