Douglas Ross

Times today reports that Scottish professional ref and MP Douglas Ross has been promoted to be a Scotland Office minister in a reshuffle by the new Conservative administration. He had apparently reduced his refereeing output since becoming an MP and I imagine that he will need to reduce it further or leave professional refereeing altogether with his new commitments. The days of Dennis Howell MP, Minister of Sport and FL ref for 15 seasons are, I suggest, long gone!

I actually don't think it will have the adverse affect implied there - with the increased Conservative majority I think he will have more latitude to go away for European trips etc - with the number of close votes last year it was basically impossible.

Being a Scottish Office minister will mean spending more time in Scotland rather than Westminster so he might be able to make it work.

He should resign as a professional official and focus 100% on representing his constituency and the Scotland office!

If Nicola Sturgeon has her way he would be able to concentrate on his abilities to run the line.  Regardless, this is getting far too political for RTR as that is best left to the FA.
