I am sure you have all seen the rant by the Dorking manager / Chairman / whatever other jobs he does after Saturday's match.

The National League is made up of mostly FT players (at the top of their game) but the referees are still on their promotion track. He doesn't seem to realise that the best referees get promoted to the EFL and the NL is left with new trainees to fill their spots. It is a similar  point made by the Women's league and League 1 & 2 clubs.

Since the players are FT, should we be looking at expanding the pool of FT referees. I know it would cost the FA a massive sum, but the extra training and resources must improve the quality of the officials. Also, the FT could employ ex-pro's (which is what they want to do) and get them though the system. With the EPL/EFL. NL and WSL there would be 65-70 matches per weekend to be covered. Working on the normal 1.5 officials per match, you would need c100 referees and c100 assistants (as some assistants may wish to retain their jobs and not become FT).

Any thoughts

No chance. League's 1 & 2 don't get full time referees so it's not going to happen in the National league.

He needs to remember that rants like his are part of why so many referees leave at grassroots level. There's a real crisis in recruitment & retention, in a huge part down to the abuse referees receive from people like him.

I suspect that the history of Marc White's rants starts in the Crawley League, continues through every division of the West Sussex to where they are now and is in no way confined to officials. It might be argued that if you happen to be the founder, financier, chairman and manager of what by some measures is England's most successful club you're more entitled than most to have your say, but rather more tact and diplomacy might be appreciated at times by those who otherwise respect his undoubted achievements and the level of commitment that may lead him to speak as he thinks he finds.

Without knowing exactly what he said, I can understand where he's coming from. Southend's demise from the Football League has enabled me to witness any number of shocking performances in the National League (of course there have been a few good ones, but not that many). For many of the referees, this is their first experiences of professional first team football and their first experience of extreme professional, shall I say spoiling, tactics and are simply out of their depth. They don't seem to do that many games padding out appointments with women's games, Fourthing and development football so the necessary experience takes longer to acquire and the really good ones are whisked through to FL in no time at all.

Unaffordable full-time referees down to the National League is not the answer.

There is no need for it to cost the FA anything.  Call the bluff of the complainants. Tell them that if they want full time officials at their level they can have them and it will cost them £xxxx per club per year.  If they are not prepared to stump up the cash then we will know how much of a priority it is for them.
