On another forum that I frequent (not football) this thread would have been divided into two specific threads.  It seems a long time since Mr England got a mention!!!
Come on BMB, Charlieboy and other admins!

Speaking personally, and as the person who initiated this Darren England thread, one of the things I particularly like about RTR is the way that discussions can meander in a fairly leisurely and tangential way at times. A holistic rather than a compartmentalised approach is much to my liking.

Our Admin people do a fantastic job. I gladly own my debt of sincere thanks to them.

There is that added to the fact this forum is a bit of a pig when it comes to doing these things!  Nothing is easy, the tools are even more antiquated than bmb.  To do so requires splitting each set of posts individually and then remerging them all with the relevant to them ones and scrolling half a mile of options in one column while not getting them mixed with the half a mile list of options in the 2nd column to find the right option! I therefore take the wiser solution of letting threads happily meander in and out of topics. Barely anything seems to stay on topic for long around here and as long as people aren't fighting I tend to leave you all to it!
Hajrá Lilák. Csak a Kispest. Hajrá Magyarok! Hajrá játékvezetői csapat! Soha ne add fel. Nincs sárga kérem!!! No Chris Kavanagh doesn't live in Ashton or even in the Greater Manchester area!!

What is life without a bit of meandering here and there. We have been in lockdown and the only thing to keep ones interest is to let ones mind meander at will.
Normally I would be meandering to various football grounds or travelling on a ship to various countries, however, all of this has been curtailed and I have been stuck here in England ------so here we are back at Darren ---after a small meander. Nobody was killed or injured ----and Darren will be doing his bit at Leicester on Friday evening and good luck to him.

I would be interested how Left Field knows Arthur Smith's initials were AWS if he was usually billed as AW, as indeed he is by Upton. Perhaps he is a relative or a good friend of Mr Smith or perhaps even the man himself; I do not know if Arthur Smith is still with us. Or perhaps there are match day programmes with his three initials given. Evidence is always a good thing even for those of us who often have been charged with picking holes in it.

Arthur ( Smith and Jones ) is a name making somewhat of a comeback. We have a very new addition called Arthur and I am pleased to say his parents have had the wisdom of giving him three forenames but the initials are AFS ( close but no cigar ! ! )

A search of the historical documents of the Referees' Association may provide evidence.  As Arthur Smith was - for some years - the RA's General Secretary - his name would have been appended to official documents from that time.

A can offer no hard evidence, just a nagging memory of his initials - they stick in my head.  Other examples from the summer game that instantly spring to mind are P C R Tufnell (Philip Charles Roderick) and R G D Willis (Robert Gerard Dillon - with the last name self-added).

I always had thought that R G D Willis had given himself the third forename of Dylan in homage to Bob Dylan. Another urban myth exploded perhaps.

You’re right, he did. The correct spelling is Dylan, not Dillon.

Absolutely, no idea where "Dillon" came from #losingtheplot
And his second name was George not Gerard.  And of course he was known as Bob rather than Robert.  You got Willis right though!   ;D

Some of the batsmen ( can we use that word these days?) he played against used to call him other things!

Batters now, apparently.

I laughed when I was typing the original because, in spite of the recent furore about it, my dad, a true Lancastrian always talked about batters and also stumpers!

Same county many years earlier MJK Smith and his son also a warwickshire player NMK Smith.
Both England internationals.

A double international in the case of MJK.

APE Knott and KWR Fletcher are two that come quickly to my mind.

... and at some point, they will have opposed IVA Richards, AME Roberts and CEH Croft!
