In the more working-class environment of Rugby League, I can only recall DTH Davies of Pendlebury, who was the top dog in the early sixties, and much later HFT Mason of Halifax, who bdid not reach quite such heights. I remember a touch judge, JRT O'Connor from Huddersfield, and there may have been others, but they were a rarity.

In the site's previous incarnation, we were, however, able to draw up a list of about a dozen Scottish league referees, from a much smaller pool than the Football League list.

This discrepancy was reflected by my grandparents. The Yorkshire ones gave their two sons the one Christian name (Frank and James), while the Scottish ones - in no ways posh - christened their two daughters with the names Margaret Jane Wylie and Mary Ailsa Young.

JCFC ended with the boring compromise of two - one of which I don't like too much ... and the other I absolutely loathe.

In the good old days, the newspapers used to print full results of Amateur Golf Championships. Though not a golfer, I always read these with interest and picked names to support. J. Ambridge (West Herts) had a certain appeal, as my family were regular listeners to The Archers. My favourite though, with the three initials, was JRW Walkinshaw (Haggs Castle.)

Better known was RDBM Shade, whose initials were rendered by his colleagues as Right Down the Bloody Middle.

It is a shame that a certain Fat Lady, mentioned as an "accredited cricket umpire"(whatever that might mean) in Wikipedia, did not take up the whistle as well. A programme listing the referee as C T P A M J A E T L E Dickson Wright would surely have been quite a collector's item.

Thank you JCFC; I hadn't realised John Brooks was also part of the exclusive three forename initial club. He also goes up in my estimation though perhaps my high opinion should be reserved for Brooks pere and mere.

Of course having three forename initials does not automatically confer greatness. One thinks of A C F in particular. However, this is more than counter-balanced by  A W S,  D R G,  T H C,  L F G,   M J D and to bring us back to another thread N C H.

I think that DRG, THC and NCH are respectively Nippard, Reynolds and Burtenshaw.  Turvey and Bodenham have already been identified, but LFG doesn't ring any bells with me.

Cricket umpire  “Dusty” Rhodes had the initials A E G which stood for this wonderful trio - Albert Ennion Growcott
Good umpire too incidentally, standing in 8 Tests and 3 ODIs between 1963 and 1973.

DWG may have been a little before your time.

He was the one in the difficult position of having been the appointed referee for the next game at Millwall after Mr Burtenshaw had been attacked and the referees had threatened a boycott.

By bad on A W S - I should have known better.

The referee I am thinking of was Mr Smith, from the West Midlands, football league referee whilst holding the post of General Secretary of the Referees' Association c1990s.   I thought he was a three initial chap, but could be (again) mistaken.

Any takers?

This I think is Arthur Smith of Rubery, West Midlands whom Upton lists as A W Smith, with no third forename initial S

Perhaps a case of  Alas! Smith and Jones

Honestly JCFC this is without Upton, but perhaps a case of Dr. Brady I presume
