Darren Cann on the TV!
« on: Thu 02 Dec 2021 17:31 »
Just watching the BBC quiz Pointless and was trying to put a name to the face taking part in the programme.
When I saw a close up, I thought “That’s Darren Cann”. Richard Osman said Darren is one of the most famous assistant referees in the country, and Mr. Cann came across as modest and didn’t want to blow his trumpet as one of the officials at the 2010 World Cup Final.
As they say, it’s a small world!

Yes, a repeat. I saw it again, and was pleased that Darren, rather than his partner, provided the £1500 winning answer to do with sailing in the Olympics. A man of many talents it seems!

And commendable modesty. When the final four subjects came up he said to his friend that he knew nothing about any of them and that  it was his call and then proceeded to provide the prize winning answer.

There has been a category 'International Referees and Umpires' which has kept coming up for the final prize-winning round. However it came up again (and was not chosen) just 2-3 days before Darren made his one and only appearance on the show. Also, Darren missed out on a jackpot of £12,500 which was won the previous night with a pointless answer on Ashes cricket in the 21st century. Mrs AT and I usually play the final round at home and I think I might get a pointless answer on Refs and Umpires if/when it is finally chosen. London Underground is another!

I believe our interests may coincide AT, apart from watching quiz shows with our better halves which is something which rarely happens in the Whistleblower household with the occasional exception of Only Connect. I too tend to catch the final round of Pointless before the 6pm News. My best chance of a pointless answer would also be Refs and Umpires ( well only the former actually ) and the London Underground and perhaps, possibly, nineteenth century literature.

At last, someone has chosen 'International Referees & Umpires' for the Pointless Final.

Three topics actually seemed rather tame when they came up last night, with many possibilities to get a pointless answer and the resulting money:

Any UK football referee who has refereed at the men's World Cup finals
Any umpire who has stood in 25 or more tests
Any rugby referee who has officiated at World Cup finals.

The contestants chose 'Nigel Evans' which was incorrect (getting the MP muddled with rugby ref Nigel Owens who scored points), cricket umpire Dickie Bird who scored points, and one other - name forgotten - who scored points or was incorrect. The money thus stayed safe for another night and topic.

Pointless football refs (given) included, rather surprisingly in my view, George Courtney and Philip Don.

My choices:

Football refs, - McCabe, Jennings and Adair (all 1966 and all, I imagine pointless)
Cricket umpires - Constant and Shepherd
Rugby refs - no idea!

Good fun but getting the answers right at home doesn't unfortunately get you the money! But I'll keep trying!

I think I would have gone for Phil Don and Paul Durkin for the World Cup Finals and Glen Jackson ( because I actually saw him at Murrayfield ) or Ken McCartney for the Rugby Six Nations ( I think it was Six Nations rather than World Cup but I may be mistaken ). I wouldn't have chosen an Umpire.

The problem is you sometimes get hundreds of potential pointless answers, as with this category, and of course they only name/show a few such as Courtney & Don. Was Durkin pointless? I don't know but I would imagine most UK football reps would have been pointless, particularly anybody from 1966 and earlier.

I was very surprised that not one of the 100 people mentioned Courtney but I suppose it was a long time ago now and most people have absolutely zero interest in football refereeing. I wonder which referees were named, Poll and Webb I should think.

Football refs - Got a fair few I could name, but the ones I'd go for would be George Reader, Bob Davidson and Clive White
Cricket umps - Nowhere near as knowledgeable on this one - Dickie Bird and Billy Bowden are the only two names that immediately leap to mind (did Martin Bodenham ever get to that level in cricket?)
Rugby refs - Better knowledge than the cricket umpires, but not as good as the football refs! Alain Rolland, Wayne Barnes and JP Doyle would be my choices.

No, last seen by me at Chelmsford in 2015. I believe he retired the following year after circa half a dozen seasons at County level.

Interesting they confused him with Nigel Evans who in his role as a deputy speaker of the house of commons must feel like a referee at times!!
