D Orsato - MNU v PSG

This is going to be a very unpopular opinion but I don’t really care:

Orsato goes across to screen to have a look at potential headbutt by Fred and gives him only a yellow card. . Fred leans in with his head and by the letter of the law it probably should be a red - but the PSG player goes down like he’s been shot!

IMO he has used common sense. There is very little contact on Paredes who is rolling around on the floor trying to get another player sent off.

On a side note as well, You then have neymar rolling around after McTominay tackles him - he is just pathetic and then berates the referee as if he is some divine god who can’t be touched.

Refreshing to see a referee not falling for the typical cheating theatrics and using common sense constantly missing from the professional game!

I think Orsato is handling the match extremely well. Whether he is applying the laws extremely well is a different matter if you get my point!

That said I think there have been examples in UEFA RAPs in previous years of players going head to head and shoving aggressively and a YC is recommended. I know this isn’t exactly the same though and I’m not sure if there are similar examples in more recent RAPs so not sure what the latest interpretation is.

Seems to have split opinions on other referee sites. I’d love to see how UEFA assess this one but we may have to guess that from Orsato’s appointments  in the coming weeks!!

Orsato has had 2 chances to RC Fred.  I've some sympathy with the 'common sense' argument given the usual theatrical reaction to the head movement, but I was surprised he gave a YC to the PSG player in a later incident when replays suggested it was Fred who was the worse offender.

Fred should be substituted because he looks an accident waiting to happen. If he's not, and does get a RC, more serious questions of OGS.

And now Fred has been sent off for what looks like a very good tackle. Awful decision!

Have you submitted your application to replace him?

Perhaps I could have made more as a fortune teller microscopist or I should try the lottery!

We don't know what may have been said to Orsato at HT, but I thought Rio (or was it Scholes?) put it very diplomatically when he said that the referee probably had a low tolerance level towards Fred after HT who should have been aware of that before stretching for that challenge.  It did look harsh and I can't say that overall I was impressed with Orsato.

A pity because United were much improved early in the second half but we lacked a clinical finish after some good moves.

So is this a new rule? You can go to the screen for a potential yellow card offence now, when in my view, it's a red....

If it a potential red then they can go to the screen and have a look, if they then decide to penalise with a yellow then sobeit. If the observer on the night deemed it a red then he will be heavily marked down on it. Viewing the monitor and getting a decision wrong is considered a bigger error. I can't remember the exact wording in the handbook now but that's the jist of it.

Which makes sense - if you have seen it multiple times, from different angles and still get it wrong, that has to be worse than getting it wrong in real time.

It was a strange one!

Orsato clearly hadn’t seen the incident but spent much more time trying to find the monitor than he did looking at it - barely a glance!

Maybe he had already been told what had happened, what to award and to go across to the monitor in order to satisfy the pundits about who was making the decision?  (Cynical old me again!!)
