S ATTWELL - Chelsea v Fulham

Slightly off topic but listening to Howard Webb before the match and I have to say I like this new approach of Webb out in the grounds, talking to the media and communicating his ideas and philosophies with how he wants to groom SG1.

We never saw this with Riley and I really look forward to seeing how Webb progresses and the transparency that’ll be prevalent in his tenure at the helm.

Watched it as well, it is what you should expect from a senior manager.  Explaining decisions honestly without necessarily chucking the referees under the bus, it is looking very promising.

It was very impressive and so refreshing.  This is what is needed and the fact that he is talking with the game's stakeholders reassuring. Webb is right, football is about opinions which I guess is why we love the game.
It will be interesting to see how he develops referees and what tools he gives to help them.

Not a bad half overall, but terrible decision to pull back play when Mudryk fouled Tete when Fulham had a good advantage. A further slap in the face that a yellow card wasn't produced when Palhinha had seen yellow for something similar earlier. Personally would've shown yellow when Robinson had the ball knocked out of his hand when about to take a throw in.

No grumbles with Attwell tonight aside from the incident where advantage could have been played.

Let some physical stuff go which seems to be a regular occurrence.

Thanks for providing the link.

I think this is great, obviously Webb is much more confident in front of a camera than Riley was, but even so it’s great to see. Hopefully it continues.

It was interesting to hear Webb say that the general feedback was the goal in the Manchester derby should have been disallowed for offside so that decision was more likely if a situation like that arose again.

First of all Howard Webb comes accross as a good communicator and very comfortable in front of the cameras, a trait his predecessor didnt have.
Secondly he and his team are prepared to listen to opinions in the game, it was good to hear
Him say that the decision in the manchester derby was subjective and could have been given either way. Further he says the game as a whole feels that the goal should have been disallowed, i guess the pgmol have learned again after the instance with Rodri and Mings of few years back at the etihad, where now offside would be given.

A game of opinions and interpretations of the laws as he correctly said.

A good interview.

The interview with Howard Webb was a breath of fresh air, not least because he didn't duck the questions. Asked specifically about the Andy Carroll challenge, he said VAR didn't feel it met the threshold for clear and obvious when the referee had given a YC, but it should have been a red card. He admitted a mistake had been made.

I imagine his time in the US has helped his being comfortable in front of the cameras. A good communicator; let's see how that is developed.

Webb is an excellent communicator and this is one of the reasons he was an excellent on field official.

I think he has a really positive outlook on the improvements we may see moving forwards.

He probably developed good communication skills during his time as a Police Officer. He comes across very well.

Whilst the interview with Webb was fascinating and enlightening (and exactly what people need to hear), unfortunately this thread has been somewhat hijacked by that and not what was an enthralling game of football (for a 0-0 draw).

Bar the clear error to award a FK when an advantage should've been played, I think Attwell managed the game well overall, which allowed for a pulsating match. My only complaint was the consistency in the awarding of cards. I have no complaints against the YKs given to the Fulham players, but the same wasn't the case for Chelsea players committing similar offences, Mudryk most notably.
