I thought it was a rather poor appointment on Monday. There was no need to appoint him to that game on Sunday. It still feels very soon after the Everton game and is one of the highest profile fixtures of the weekend, given it's 3rd against 1st. It was always going to create headlines and a negative reaction, especially as it's an international break and so there's not as much day to day to talk about as there might normally be.

But having made the appointment, it now looks even worse that he's been taken off it - regardless of what the reason may or may not be. The presumption is going to be it's because of the inevitable reaction so it now looks to the outside like they're just giving in to public pressure.

The whole thing could so easily have been avoided by appointing him as VAR to Sheffield United V West Ham instead on Monday.

Or make appointments on merit and don't put him anywhere near a VAR !

Or that!

I would certainly put him amongst the weakest of the SG1 as VARs from evidence so far. I think a sensible aim would be to phase out the weakest 4 or 5 and look to bring a different half a dozen or so in, whether from current SG2 officials or elsewhere (retired officials, officials lower down the pyramid, non-officials, whatever you please!)

For balance, I think Coote has done pretty well on the pitch since being promoted to SG1 - better than I expected really, as I was not too convinced by him previously.

Agree with you that Coote has done well in the middle; I too was sceptical about his promotion but have been pleasantly surprised. His VAR abilities however leave much to be desired.......
What I still can’t get my head round is Lee Probert being turned down as a possible VAR official because he couldn’t take or pass a PHYSICAL fitness test. What a complete load of 🎱 🎱!

This is a guy who has spent the last 15+ years making decisions "live" and he must have been pretty good at it to graduate to the Premier League. Suddenly he's burdened with VAR and he now looks mentally all over the place. His initial instinct appears spot on in awarding the penalty (perhaps a touch soft but there's contact so a perfectly reasonable call) but then you have the VAR official in his ear.

Imagine what David Coote must be thinking as he runs over to the monitor, he's just come back from being very publically suspended by his employers and he's just awarded a penalty but his colleague, who has access to multiple camera angles, thinks this is a clear and obvious error. I can't speak for the referee (I have never met him) but if I was in his position, my brain would be absolutely scrambled looking at the monitor.

On the evidence of this evening mr coote cant even review his on field decision correctly at the monitor,
But then neither could mr oliver a few hours earlier at villa park, nor good enough from fifa officials.
Var is becoming a total farce. It would appear that certain officials and their bosses May be culpable.

The so called “bosses” and football administrators will never admit responsibility for mistakes!

Agreed as a general point them and politicians alike!

I can't recall any examples this season of referees giving penalties real time only to then see it chalked off by VAR.  We then have two in the space of 4 hours, and that to me has the word "directive" screaming out loud.  That's two baffling decisions today where VAR has got involved in changing awarded penalties where clear and obvious wasn't even vaguely in play.  Someone from PGMOL needs to come out and explain what has happened, but to be honest I'm at the point now that heads need to roll and by that I don't mean the referees and VARs.

The monster was introduced and is very much part of the modern game at the top level ---learn to live with it or watch some other sport because you will constantly be upset by one VAR decision or another -----just look at this board every week! The game does not mater any more --it is technology which rules.
I know that I will get complaints again because I am not in favour of VAR, however, so be it. The whole thing is not goo for the game and is totally unfair to those officiating who must wonder what the next Law change will be and how should it be interpreted.

Football at the top level is becoming a fiasco.
THere was a smashing game today between Bournemouth and Reading in the Championship with plenty of incident, plenty of goals, plenty of talking points but no VAR to encumber the enjoyment of the game. Football as I like it!
Referee's decision used to be final!

Personally I don’t think the Villa one, or either in the United v WBA games were penalties. But that is what the professional game is turning into

Personally I'm fine with the no penalty in Aston Villa V Brighton game. I think very theatrical from attacker and any contact not significant. I don't think VAR would always have intervened but I think 'clear and obvious' bar in England has generally been set too high so am happy with intervention.

I've not seen West Brom penalty in Man Utd game yet - Man Utd fans less bothered about retakes for keeper being off the line than they were after Crystal Palace game now two have gone in their favour!

a family member, who only follows football casually and I've never heard comment on refereeing before, came in as we were watching the second half and said 'Oh dear - not David Coote!' He's obviously getting a bad reputation.
