This is a guy who has spent the last 15+ years making decisions "live" and he must have been pretty good at it to graduate to the Premier League. Suddenly he's burdened with VAR and he now looks mentally all over the place. His initial instinct appears spot on in awarding the penalty (perhaps a touch soft but there's contact so a perfectly reasonable call) but then you have the VAR official in his ear.
Imagine what David Coote must be thinking as he runs over to the monitor, he's just come back from being very publically suspended by his employers and he's just awarded a penalty but his colleague, who has access to multiple camera angles, thinks this is a clear and obvious error. I can't speak for the referee (I have never met him) but if I was in his position, my brain would be absolutely scrambled looking at the monitor.
