So the premier league returns and we are talking about the incompetence of VAR and the on field officials once again.

It’s a clear DOGSO because had Silva not played the ball with his hand the Palace player was through on goal with no covering defender in sight. It has to be a red.

I cannot fathom how VAR has accepted the yellow card.

Even sending Kavanagh to the monitor would have been the absolute minimum, but a FIFA official should have really dealt with it on the field.

Am I being daft or is the safest decision to give the defensive free kick for Ayew barging into Silva?

This incident reminds me so much of Bowen and Konsa incident in Aston Villa vs West Ham with Chris Kavanagh the referee (Stuart Attwell the VAR that day as well) with the yellow then upgraded to red.

Stuart Attwell really should have intervened.

Not DOGSO for me because of distance from goal and direction of the ball.  Ayu still 35yds from goal and would’ve played towards the touch line to get past Silva.  And not clear on goal with Chilwell central and retreating towards goal.

DOGSO very harsh from that distance.

I’m more leaning towards SPA than DOGSO but it’s very tight. It’s the kind of cynical deliberate action that deserves to be red but obviously it has to fit with what’s in Law. Not sure I could be 100% sure Ayew is doing all of controlling it, then moving goal bound whilst outpacing the already retreating defenders, and then getting a shot away.

I think the optimal outcome would’ve been to invite Kavanagh to have a look for himself and confirm what he thought he saw, but that’s obviously not the PGMOL protocol. .

It’s certainly one that if if it’s given as a red onfield it’s not overturned

Agreed

distance between the offence and the goal - too far out
general direction of the play - he was running more towards the touchline not towards goal
likelihood of keeping or gaining control of the ball - possible
location and number of defenders - other defenders on their way back who would have been in position by the time he reached closer to goal

Does not tick the boxes for DOGSO but does for SPA so yellow card & free kick correct by the ref & VAR on the possible red card review. Correct call by Kavanagh & Attwell.
Hajrá Lilák. Csak a Kispest. Hajrá Magyarok! Hajrá játékvezetői csapat! Soha ne add fel. Nincs sárga kérem!!! No Chris Kavanagh doesn't live in Ashton or even in the Greater Manchester area!!

I think I just about side with Kavanagh on this one. Distance from goal and the fact Ayew is going at no real speed and initially travelling away from goal, presents enough doubt for me, so yellow is correct.

Having said that, a red card would not have been overturned had Kavanagh gone with it initially. Attwell correct not to intervene for me.

I think you can argue this one either way - I think you could argue he's in and will get a shot away and I think you can argue because of the angle and distance the covering defender could get back, no matter what you do in this one someone isn't happy as they can make the counter argument quite well.  I think it's one you have to go with the onfield decision, I think they dealt with that correctly.

Red card for me as if the handball doesn’t occur then for me he is clear through on goal ready for a shot. Having said that, I don’t think either red or yellow is an obvious error and therefore difficult for VAR to intervene for me.

Personally I think red, but there is no way VAR can get involved as very difficult to say a caution was a clear and obvious error.

Based on that perspective, I'd also say it's not UEFA protocol to be fair.
