Crewe Alex's Perry Ng has been banned for six games for spitting water over the Cheltenham coach at the end of last Saturday's FA Cup tie which Cheltenham won 2-1 aet. In the present circumstances, I agree fully with the FA's decision and length of ban which sends out a clear message to players during the present Covid health crisis.

What a complete idiot and potentially a dangerous one. If he deliberately aimed the water at the Cheltenham coach then I would have given him a lot more than six games.

If someone in the street had done that to another they’d be charged with Battery. It would have sent out an even stronger message to idiots who do this disgraceful act if this had happened on this occasion.

It was probably better that the officials didn't see him do that? If they did, would he have received a lesser sanction?

Six games is the standard punishment for spitting.  In the current circumstances I would argue that six games is unduly lenient.

Will the new tier system impact the football?  I find the logic of the new tiers from today rather flawed! Hampshire is going into Tier 4 apart from the Isle of Wight and New Forest which are Tier 3. You can't get into either of them without going into Hampshire and travel between tier 3 & 4 is on the not allowed list. Where is the logic there? They are effectively cut off as they are surrounded by Tier 4 areas. Dorset is staying in Tier 2 but parts of around me locally are one section of road in Hants, another section of it in dorset. I can meet my friend from Christchurch in the park for a dog walk but around 3/4 of that same park is in Hants and now in tier 4 so we can't walk around the whole path. Her house is Tier 2, her next door neighbour is tier 4! I'm well & truly baffled!

As far as I am aware you can travel through tier 4 areas as part of a journey, you just can't stop.

It will absolutely affect football below step 2, but anything elite level can carry on.

With all the postponements over the Christmas period (and probably plenty more to come too), I think it’s around 20-25 games called off, how long can football realistically go on like this??

spare midweeks are starting to be taken up by postponements, and not just for Covid, but that time of the year when bad weather also affects the programme. Also there are very few clubs who can have fans in the ground which is probably costing more money to have less fans than it does to have full capacity.
What does it mean for non league clubs as well, particularly conference and conference north clubs who have played behind closed doors all season?? What if restrictions are further tightened which has already happened in Southern areas??

How long before football is called off entirely? How long before clubs start to go bust because they just cannot sustain the current climate?

They will be desperate to complete the season, but that will obviously be easier at Premier League and Championship levels where there is more testing.  The reason I don't think anyone will want to jack it in is there is light at the end of the tunnel with the vaccine.  Also, whilst I kind of agree with you about finances, even if the leagues are ended the clubs still have to pay the players, creditors, taxmen, etc.  Sadly I do think clubs will fail due to this, I have a horrible feeling it will be my own club Sheffield Wednesday although that would be more mismanagement than Covid related .. !

I fully expect that most, if not all, of the country will be put into tier 4 tomorrow, or possibly even a full national lockdown, so that will be the end of all non-elite football.  Currently youth football is allowed in tier 4, but I can't see what continuing.

Well I wasn't far wrong ...!

That's non-elite open age football off now in all of the areas moved from tier 3 to tier 4.

Absolutely baffling to me that they are delaying the return to school, which I actually agree with, but continuing to allow U18 football even in tier 4.  I can only assume that is an oversight and they will stop it once they realise.

Yep there it is - another dagger in the heart of non league and non elite sport! The final nail in the coffin of struggling sport clubs up and down the pyramid.
How many referees, leagues, support networks, volunteers and administrators will we lose with this devastating news.

I myself are already considering packing in not only my refereeing but my match day coordinator role in a local mini soccer league!

You just have to hope that the financial support is there.  At least there is now light at the end of the tunnel and even if this season doesn't get completed we should be back to normal for the next one.

How do we know things will be back to normal next season?? I fear the repercussions of this one will be felt for years to come - and not just in the sporting world

They won’t be..... because of the back log from this season that will prevail.

Perhaps binning the EFL trophy and or the EFL cup for next season as a start and using those dates to backfill any time that needs to be made up to return the following season to normality.

Having one season of these competitions off the table which frankly the top clubs show a disdain for when they field their second team would probably be worthwhile.

The main priority however is to get fans back to the grounds, and maybe a delay until September would give enough time for vaccinations to be widespread and give the clubs some much needed financial revenue.

We can only hope that the vaccine works and does what the experts think it will do.  They only need to protect the vulnerable, doesn't really matter if everyone else is then merrily spreading it around as the vast majority won't even get symptoms.  Something like more than 80% of deaths have been those over 75 or those with underlying health issues, get as many as those groups as possible vaccinated and we can return to life as we knew it, and that includes football.
