The medics have said that we can no longer contain it and in the absence of a vaccination building up herd immunity is our best beet. Most of us will probably get it at some point, but hopefully just mildly - the important thing is we try to particularly avoid passing it on to the elderly or those with serious health conditions.

There's a few of us on here in the high risk categories, me for one, so let's hope none of us that are get it! Herd immunity is fine for those not in the high risk categories, it means nothing to those who are. Vastly reducing the spread like all other countries are trying to do with the social isolation & closing everything down, however may well slow it long enough for a vaccine to have been found so that those who are high risk can be vaccinated & at least stand a better chance of survival. I saw yesterday that Canada have a potential vaccine that they are ready to start testing. The medical experts here seem to be at some odds with the medics in every other country - that concerns me!

I am also in the High/At Risk category.

I am trying very hard to stay calm and rational but when all I am seeing is quotes of "if you're not in the at risk group you'll be fine" and that all those who have died are in the said group that is easier said than done.

It's beginning to feel a little like we are expendable and our demise is almost to be expected for the longevity of mankind.

Tough times indeed.

As for the season at all levels. If we are not going again by the start of June at the latest I believe all leagues will be voided and reset to the start of this season with teams as they are.
The levels of litigation that would proceed should teams be promoted/relegated from positions now would cause mayhem and next season wouldn't start!

Yes, tough on those having a successful year but I don't see another option.

If that happens it will be interesting what will happen regarding referee promotions and removals, again at all levels.

I know this is a refereeing site, but in the current climate, thinking about which referees may or may not be promoted really isn't interesting at all.

I don't think it's unreasonable to include a reference to football/refereeing as a throwaway line, especially when speaking about the situation very frankly and noting issues that poster personally faces.

Take care everyone.

All the scientists I've heard suggest 12-18 months at the earliest for a vaccine - although apparently it would previously have taken 20 years.

https://twitter.com/DrMattMcCarthy/status/1238939403206221824

TREATMENT Update: New data indicates remdesivir is genuinely promising for the treatment of severe #coronavirus infection. It’s not yet approved for use anywhere so Gilead has been releasing it via compassionate use. It has already saved lives, but there’s been a sticking point:

Remdesivir causes brief liver inflammation so doctors have been instructed not to use it in patients with mild liver issues. The problem: coronavirus commonly causes liver dysfunction (called viral hepatitis). Many were disqualified from receiving remdesivir due to liver tests.

The calculus has just changed; we now believe remdesivir is good enough to use in certain critically-ill patients with liver dysfunction. Formal guidance will soon change & will greatly expand the number of patients who can receive this potentially life-saving drug. Great news!

As I don't actually believe everything I read on twitter I did look further: https://www.gilead.com/purpose/advancing-global-health/covid-19

Not a vaccine, not a cure, long way to go for the scientists but potentially a very good start!

I have no words for this update: https://twitter.com/mqmqqmqm/status/1236751849769676801

US pharma company Gilead, which owns the most promising COVID-19 vaccine, is booming in "pandemic stock sales," preparing to sell it for $50-100/person, and in a legal battle to deny the Chinese gov access, because China would make the vaccine free and ship it to the global south

*It's not actually a vaccine, it is the remdesivir mentioned in my quoted post*

But that is the nature of the virus and who knows where we shall be in another 8 days.

This hit me as being unintentionally profound. Who knows if some of us will even be here in another eight days?
Stay safe everyone!

With today's announcements, it looks as though it's  going to be several months before normality can be resumed so it isn't so much a question of finishing this season but more when can next season get started.  It all looks very bleak.

All grassroots football suspended indefinitely which will mean the end of the season in some cases!

So the prime minister & health secretary have both now tested positive...

Having given up trying to get a delivery spot and the cupboards looking rather too bare I gave in and went to ASDA today, they had security staff on the door, a long queue with people standing a couple of meters apart, no complaining or silliness.  They were only letting a few in at a time, the shop has a 1 way system set up and staff keeping people moving not browsing. I was allowed straight in as I shuffled up using my walker but they sent my son to the back of the queue, until they realised I couldn't actually manage without him and there were a couple of the staff running up & down the queue trying to find him!  It was nice & calm, people being respectful etc. As I shuffled around, I said thank you to every member of staff I saw, it made me sad how surprised they looked before giving me big beaming smiles in return, it was obvious they were not used to hearing it. :( A shout out to the shop staff out there, the guys who are disinfecting every trolly after use, the ones on the tills, those stacking the shelves, sweeping the floors and whatever other role there is. Thank you

Jermaine Wright has passed away due to complications of Covid-19, he'll be well known amongst many of us as London FA Council Member, Secretary of the North East Division and Referee Secretary of the Hackney & Leyton Sunday Football League & all round lovely person.

RIP Jermaine

Very sad, I've known Jermaine for a long time and was shocked by this news when I heard earlier today.  I don't know his age but he was certainly not in the elderly category and just goes to show it can affect anyone.

A really good video here showing Jermaine's passion for grass roots football, especially at Hackney Marshes, and how much he put into the game.
