Hi all.
In the Covid 19 (Corona Virus) pandemic crisis, I would like to share with you the way Martin Luther tackled the problem of the black death in his time. This 'plague' - pandemic killed 100 thousands.

Quote
"I shall ask God mercifully to protect us. Then I shall fumigate, help purify the air, administer medicine and take it. I shall avoid places and persons where my presence is not needed in order not to become contaminated and thus perchance inflict and pollute others and so cause their death as a result of my negligence. If God should wish to take me, he will surely find me and I have done what he expected of me and so I am not responsible for either my own death or the death of others. If my neighbour needs me however, I shall not avoid place or person but will go freely as stated above. See this is such a God fearing faith because it is neither brash nor foolhardy and does not tempt God."

Be at peace as we work through our own pandemic.

Shar Shalom
— feeling inspired.

For "God" replace with "fate", "conscience", or whatever phrase seems most appropriate, in context, to yourself.

All the scientists I've heard suggest 12-18 months at the earliest for a vaccine - although apparently it would previously have taken 20 years.

I think it's very difficult to put a country into lockdown for 18 months because of the social and economic impact. How do we buy food and essential items? How is that provided to us? What about all the people who have to work in essential services?

I guess there is nothing from stopping each individual family choosing to go into lockdown if they think it is right for them and circumstances mean they can afford it, etc.

It is clearly a very grim and serious situation.

I wonder how many people will make themselves ill by worrying about what might happen rather than just taking life as it comes and getting on with things when possible?
Personally, I never worry about anything which I can't influence or control, therefore, this is not something about which I shall worry because que sera, sera, in spite of all my best efforts.

Brexit has proved that we can trust our politicians etc. to look after us -----hasn't it?  :D

I shall be watching the NBI from the comfort of my armchair and self medicating with pálinka - I call that a win/win!

I am as bored as ahead of kick off though - I am normally mischief making either in the dressing room, boardroom or a press box around about now, not clock watching! Nebojša kicked me off of Skype & switched his phone off because I was annoying him & he said he was ready to strangle me! Charming!! :D He drew the line at wandering down to the match officials room to ask them what kit they are wearing for me! At least I got in my I love you & I'm proud of you to my boys first! He will call me back just before the boys head out onto the pitch so I can blow more kisses their way - well maybe.

35 mins until the 1st games, if anyone wants to join me!  ;D

Working for a well established supermarket.. the last few days have been absolute chaos and extremely challenging. Everyone working in our industry is trying our very best but it will get to a point where even the staff will be struggling to cope with such huge demand and unprecedented panic buying that’s going on.

The risk to our welfare is now in question given how much contact we have with everyone.

Stay safe out there!

I can only imagine. I avoid supermarkets - online delivery for me but the thousands of photos out there of empty shelves shows how mad it is. I hope you're not getting yelled at too much about a lack of loo rolls. Never understood the panic buying mentality myself.

For anyone who is on twitter there were some great videos yesterday from all around Italy. People in lockdown areas were on their balconies, music blaring and having a great sing song together. All obeying the distance thing, all in a part of their own homes but a real sense of togetherness.

Times like this I suppose we see both the best and the worst of humanity at the same time.

I was conscripted as a delivery driver today because of the sheer volumes going out the door and everybody thankfully was very understanding and appreciative of the situation...despite us being two hours behind. Most of them said they were just glad they got 95% of what they needed in the door regardless of the time.

As an figure, we are having to pick, separate, crate up and throw in the trailer about 5000 items A DAY at present. Normally it’s around 500 to 700 on normal days.

The issue is not the lack of stock per say, it’s getting ordered but it’s the supply chain that’s part of the issue. There simply isn’t enough drivers for lorries available to get the stock in. When it does arrive in shops, we then have secondary problems of staffing and physically getting the stuff out.

It was so bad Friday we left a whole cage of canned veg out and didn’t even bother putting it on the shelves, people were just taking from the bleeding stock cage!

All the scientists I've heard suggest 12-18 months at the earliest for a vaccine - although apparently it would previously have taken 20 years.

https://twitter.com/DrMattMcCarthy/status/1238939403206221824

TREATMENT Update: New data indicates remdesivir is genuinely promising for the treatment of severe #coronavirus infection. It’s not yet approved for use anywhere so Gilead has been releasing it via compassionate use. It has already saved lives, but there’s been a sticking point:

Remdesivir causes brief liver inflammation so doctors have been instructed not to use it in patients with mild liver issues. The problem: coronavirus commonly causes liver dysfunction (called viral hepatitis). Many were disqualified from receiving remdesivir due to liver tests.

The calculus has just changed; we now believe remdesivir is good enough to use in certain critically-ill patients with liver dysfunction. Formal guidance will soon change & will greatly expand the number of patients who can receive this potentially life-saving drug. Great news!

As I don't actually believe everything I read on twitter I did look further: https://www.gilead.com/purpose/advancing-global-health/covid-19

Not a vaccine, not a cure, long way to go for the scientists but potentially a very good start!

The medics have said that we can no longer contain it and in the absence of a vaccination building up herd immunity is our best beet. Most of us will probably get it at some point, but hopefully just mildly - the important thing is we try to particularly avoid passing it on to the elderly or those with serious health conditions.

There's a few of us on here in the high risk categories, me for one, so let's hope none of us that are get it! Herd immunity is fine for those not in the high risk categories, it means nothing to those who are. Vastly reducing the spread like all other countries are trying to do with the social isolation & closing everything down, however may well slow it long enough for a vaccine to have been found so that those who are high risk can be vaccinated & at least stand a better chance of survival. I saw yesterday that Canada have a potential vaccine that they are ready to start testing. The medical experts here seem to be at some odds with the medics in every other country - that concerns me!

I am also in the High/At Risk category.

I am trying very hard to stay calm and rational but when all I am seeing is quotes of "if you're not in the at risk group you'll be fine" and that all those who have died are in the said group that is easier said than done.

It's beginning to feel a little like we are expendable and our demise is almost to be expected for the longevity of mankind.

Tough times indeed.

As for the season at all levels. If we are not going again by the start of June at the latest I believe all leagues will be voided and reset to the start of this season with teams as they are.
The levels of litigation that would proceed should teams be promoted/relegated from positions now would cause mayhem and next season wouldn't start!

Yes, tough on those having a successful year but I don't see another option.

If that happens it will be interesting what will happen regarding referee promotions and removals, again at all levels.

The Health Secretary has stated that 'herd immunity' is not a policy.

From Sky News:-
Health Secretary Matt Hancock confirmed the government wasn't hoping millions of Britons get coronavirus to give "herd immunity" to the whole country, after the concept was floated by the government's chief scientific adviser.

"Herd immunity is not our goal or policy - it's a scientific concept," he told Sophy Ridge on Sunday.

"Our policy is to protect lives and to beat this virus."

It's a theory, not a proven fact that it works, and an increasing number of scientists and others are questioning the risks involved, not least a higher mortality rate.

I shall be interested to see what happens if/when we 70 year olds are quarantined indoors for 4 months as both Mrs AT and I are now in that category. At the moment, we head out to the v.g. Sainsbury's in Nantwich every few weeks whilst our younger neighbours get there's delivered on line. As I see it, this will be reversed and we will sit back and wait for the online deliveries to be made whilst watching old episodes of Corrie and Heartbeat and watching our neighbours heading off with plastic bags in hand. I too am trying to remain calm but I cannot see this working for long

AT ---I am with you on this thought because we are also a few years into our 70s and very active and have never entertained shopping on line, particularly for foodstuff because I want to see what I am buying. I am also a Voluntary Caseworker for SSAFA Forces Help and I am concerned about some of the clients who I am currently dealing with because they are certainly in need of help a lot more  than I am!
Nothing much phases me, however, this latest idea will certainly test my patience if/when it comes to pass. How will  they police it anyway?

As this is a referee site, there was a mention on Sky earlier of how National List referees for instance aren't professional and paid on a match by match basis so they will obviously be losing a fair amount of money should this suspension continue. Presumably match fees contribute quite a lot for SG1 and SG2 too. It was also mentioned that potentailly quite a few officials (and presumably players) might have holidays booked for June/July.

I would never have thought that we would be up to page 5 and 73 replies on RTR, with football suspended as it is, when I opened this thread with a fairly tongue-in-cheek comment just 8 days ago. But that is the nature of the virus and who knows where we shall be in another 8 days.
