Postponing the season isn't an option.  We are a long way behind Italy and they are still at their peak of infections, realistically the postponement would be for two months and even if the Euros are postponed that would still take us into  July when the new season starts.  Plus we now have Arteta infected, which almost certainly means at least some of his players are infected.  Best case scenario is the season is finished behind closed doors, more likely (and really, really bad for Liverpool) is it will be abandoned.

Surely They’d just give liverpool the title if the seasons off, I See It Being worse for the teams in the relegation Zone.

Mikel Arteta has now been confirmed as having the virus.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51865442

Surely this changes things? Wouldn't the whole first team squad now be in a 14 day isolation period, thus meaning they can't fulfill their fixtures?

Potentially the first team squad, coaches, medical staff/physios who are on site, analysts, general club staff, club directors, ground staff, reserve players, youth players, academy players depending on the coaching staff being in contact with the first team players/coaches, supporters who have been at the training ground, taking selfies etc - it's a long list of people beyond just the players plus whichever teams they have played in the last week or 2 will now need to consider getting their players/coaches/staff tested, as will teams who have played those teams!

Good Luck to our GPs, NHS & private hospitals

Have a 1 month summer break (partial close season) now, play 1 weekend game & 1 mid week game for a few weeks, followed by a small break during July and delay the start of the season by 1 month is a possibility.

Following the model implemented in Germany seems to be the most sensible option here imo. No relegation this year but promotions occur. More games next season only, with more teams to be relegated at the end of next season.
At this point, it's a much wider issue than Liverpool winning the league. Give them the league now, I don't care. What's at stake is much, much bigger.

I think the EPL emergency meeting today will postpone all this weekends matches and possibly clear the next 14-21 days. If the EPL does this, I feel that the Championship, National League and Steps 3-5 will also have to follow this, as the Government and FA will want a unified approach.

I also think that the FA quarter-finals next weekend will have to be postponed.

And with UEFA meeting on Tuesday, then they are going to have to suspend the CL and EL while the counties are in lock down.

The FA is going to have to extend the season for the step 3-5 past end of April - which is there deadline to organise the playoffs.

Multiple cases of Coronavirus now in the PL.. pretty certain it’ll be suspended until further notice. Will be interesting if the FL follow suit.

Personally I think they should try and continue this season whenever they can, even if that means not starting the next one until September/October time (or even shortening that one in advance, which I think would be fairer than suddenly shortening this one.)

I wouldn't be too critical of football for carrying on. The medics have said that we can no longer contain it and in the absence of a vaccination building up herd immunity is our best beet. Most of us will probably get it at some point, but hopefully just mildly - the important thing is we try to particularly avoid passing it on to the elderly or those with serious health conditions.

No unified response from the FA decision to be taken by individual leagues below EFL as we're autonomous organisations!!!

I chair a Junior League and we have to decide which is hard given no schools shut and current advice from the Chief Medical Officer.

I know some that are continuing, some giving clubs the option of whether to play.

My committee work so we make a decision by 9 tonight. Rock and hard place spring to mind

I have tried to fix the quote thingamajigga - hope I got it right! bmb

There's a few of us on here in the high risk categories, me for one, so let's hope none of us that are get it! Herd immunity is fine for those not in the high risk categories, it means nothing to those who are. Vastly reducing the spread like all other countries are trying to do with the social isolation & closing everything down, however may well slow it long enough for a vaccine to have been found so that those who are high risk can be vaccinated & at least stand a better chance of survival. I saw yesterday that Canada have a potential vaccine that they are ready to start testing. The medical experts here seem to be at some odds with the medics in every other country - that concerns me!

I'm afraid listening to the Chief Scientific Adviser on Sky yesterday made me very nervous.  To achieve herd immunity which he seemed to be advocating, would require 60% or so of the population to get it.  Do the sums - 36m people!  And what overall mortality rate do you apply to that, let alone a higher rate for us oldies?  1%?' 0.5%? Even at those low levels, the numbers are mind-blowing.  And how convincing is the argument that lockdown will simply hide the virus which would return again in the Autumn / Winter in greater measure?  Could better treatment or even a vaccine not be found in the meantime to reduce the impact.

I was reading about the SARS virus in 2009 when the first cases were reported in Scotland in the April.  Cases were widespread in England in June  and July.  But mass immunisation was available with a vaccine in October, just 6 months from the onset.  I'm no scientist so don't know how different or more complicated it is to develop a vaccine this time. However, considering the message a few days ago was not to get alarmed, the headlines now are hardly reassuring.  And Boris succeeded in getting a headline in several papers yesterday - "Many families will lose loved ones".  Scientifically probably correct alas, but diplomatic?

It is puzzling why other countries, no doubt also getting expert scientific and medical advice, have reached a different conclusion on how to react.
Is there really no hope of finding a vaccine (a solution hardly mentioned by the Science Adviser yesterday) for 12 -18 months?
