Mark Clattenburg has been named officially as the new head of refereeing in Greece.

Good Luck Mark That's not going to be an easy task.

He gets around doesn't he!

I wonder if he'll stay in refereeing management for the long term or will look for a quiet retirement in a few years.

Will he still referee or has he hung up the whistle?

He is still refereeing as well.  He's involved in the CONIFA world cup and he referees for leisure leagues as well, I believe.

It's now getting out more publicly: https://www.leisureleagues.net/news/clattenburg-heads-off-greece

and: https://www.balls.ie/football/mark-clattenburg-has-made-another-unexpected-career-move-440890

"The time is right to quit refereeing. At 45 it becomes a different challenge mentally. Now, I want to start looking at the education and management side of refereeing.

‘I’ve had a wonderful career and I want to put my experience back in rather than walking away. It’s an exciting new chapter and challenge."

Earlier it had only been announced in Greece (I did wait for that before announcing it here!) & hadn't been picked up by the press outside of there: https://www.epo.gr/News.aspx?a_id=49778&NewsType=21

So hanging up his whistle officially as well although I think he will be continuing some games in the 6 a-side leagues judging by the article on leisure leagues website.

As Mark is now officially hanging up his whistle in terms of professional football I feel it is fitting to pay tribute to his distinguished career. He is without doubt the greatest referee I have had the pleasure of seeing officiate live and in my opinion he is the most naturally talented referee England and perhaps Europe has produced in the past 10 years. His record of finals in 2016 leaves little else to be said, other than perhaps pointing out that his masterful display in the champions league final that year is one of the finest European performances I think we have ever witnessed. No doubt Mark was/is a character and maybe at times was (or at least was seen as the powers that be as) a maverick, despite the controversy though, few would deny that he was one of the finest officials the game has seen and his final hanging up of the whistle is a sad day for any of us passionate about refereeing.

I wish him the very very best of luck with his new role in Greece, I feel he will have an arduous and testing task ahead with there being a great many challenges facing refereeing in that country. I truly hope he can turn the situation around and begin a brighter future for Greek referees.

Good luck Mark

I believe that he will better than Melo Pereira.

Greek refereeing has suffered a lot these last years. After Kyros Vassaras left HFF the quality of referees and their education has become worse. We need someone who will care and who will enforce Meritocracy. Because that's what is missing from Greece. Referees are promoted through public relations and not for their performances. I think that Clatts should change that immediately.

I wish him every success on his work. I will, from time to time, inform you of his work.

Edy have there been any developments under Clattenburg's stewardship?

A small update on Clattenburg and Greece.

Clattenburg every Tuesday makes a video and analyzes every major decision in SL. It's a positive move for the fans even though, sometimes, his views are a little weird. He held a press conference a few days ago and answered many questions from the media.

Now to the difficult part. His problems and mistakes. Despite the fact that the SL list has 28 referees not all of them are qualified for VAR. 8 of them are new and can't whistle a match until they have some VAR training. So he is forced to appoint the same referees over and over again despite of their mistakes. Moreover one of the "big 4" teams (Olympiakos) announced that they withdrew their confidence on Clattenburg because he kept all of Pereira's Greek partners (Tritsonis, Koukoulakis, Kalyvas, Iosifoglou). IMO, that was his 1st mistake. He should have brought fresh members to help him. Keeping Tritsonis and Koukoulakis (who are partly responsible for the Greek refereeing mess) certainly doesn't pass a correct message to the media and fans.

Moreover his 2nd mistake is that he allowed Melo Pereira to make the refereeing lists for every category without Mark having any say on them. He had almost a month to learn the referees but unfortunately he chose to allow Pereira to form the lists.

Thank you very much edy for that update.

Indeed that is very disappointing that there hasn't been the clear out required to start afresh, if this is Clattenburg's call it is a very strange one. Do you have a link to any of his weekly explanation videos?

Is it still the situation that outside referees are brought in for many big appointments and even referees like Sidiropoulos are not getting the big games?

Edy, just wondering how things have been going under Mr. Clattenburg's stewardship?
