Interesting VAR scenario just before half time and the disallowed goal by Benzema.

Grandad Walton with the perfect legislative interpretation.

I thought Turpin was excellent - I really like his manner with the players and how he referees with a smile on his face.

Not a particularly challenging game but he handled it very well.

A fairly straightforward game to referee with both teams by and large behaving themselves. I think Turpin did extremely well and fully justified his appointment.   He does look very young while one of his ARs looked very mature !

The second Liverpool player might have deflected the ball to Benzema but a Liverpool player deliberately kicked it in the first place. The Madrid player running in didn't even kick the ball.

It feels to me that the offside goal should have stood.  I'm not saying the refereeing team were wrong as I think determining a 'deliberate play' in that scenario is nigh on impossible but as a fan, legislation ruling that out feels incorrect to me.  I don't watch a huge amount of European football but he has always seemed like a safe pair of hands to me and nothing changed my opinion last night.

Valverde definitely plays the ball. Konate and Fabinho have both already committed themselves before Valverde plays the ball off them, so IMO you can count the touches as deflections.

A good/expected level performance by Turpin on a normal difficulty match.

Turpin was lenient as usual and his line is what UEFA expected to see. For my taste he should have issued at least 2 more cautions.

The disallowed goal is IMO a correct decision.

My only complaint (and this applies to literally every match I watch), was that Turpin allowed highway robbery (geddit?) when it came to added time. Real Madrid did everything they could to use up (added) time. There should've been another 2 minutes of added time from the stoppages/substitutions that took place after 90 minutes and just before the 5 added minutes had elapsed, RM committed a foul and one of their players hoofed the ball as far as possible. Turpin then looked at his watch and blew the final whistle. A bit more time should've been added and a YC issued IMHO.

It could be argued that 5 minutes of added time was excessive in the first place.

It is contradictory in the laws that conversely if a defender plays the ball and it "deflects" off an attacker to another attacker (who is in an offside position) that offside is them given.

Agreed.  Yellow cards should have been issued to Carvajal and Alexander-Arnold for cynical, attacker-stopping fouls.

And one to Vinicius for the reckless tackle on fabinho. Also should have been one in the last play of the game or even two for kicking the ball away.

Not the best game overall from Turpin, not sure how he gave Militao a freekick when he rugby tackled Diaz. Not sure why the throw couldn't be taken. Not convinced on the disallowed goal which took too long.
