Of course this is one of the most watched games in world football and most Old Firm referees are subject to all sorts of minute scrutiny and ridiculous conspiracy theories when they blow their whistle.
But today, Nick Walsh can be very delighted on his excellent handling of this always tempestuous affair. Right on top of the play from beginning to end, he allowed the game to have life, allowed the physical side to go a little bit and only used his yellow card when appropriate and may I say, correctly too. Not only that, he was always in good position to make decisions and sold them well to the players who barely argued with him, which is terrific to see.
It did help that Celtic dominated the game from start to finish and Rangers weren’t at the races at all, but you can only referee what is in front of you and Mr. Walsh can go home without the usual scorn that follows the referees of this fixture. In fact, I go so far to say he did a first class job and neither side or their supporters can go on social media and voice their often wide of the mark opinions.
Top performance!
