The most pedantic referee in the EFL.

He gave many of the decisions Sunderland's way and stopping play to allow a Sunderland player to put his boot back on was annoying.

Three handballs in the Sunderland penalty area, a second yellow card, a back pass and the Moore foul in the area all went the way of Sunderland. The ref did influence the result, which was a shame.

He didn't, however, ruin too decent sides going toe-toe.

Sunderland conceding fifteen fouls to Plymouth's seven, and Sunderland winning the YC count 3-1 tells a different story.
Whilst I consider myself not to be neccesarily Sunderland's biggest fan, but certainly in the top one we are certainly not a big club either., so sorry but we won the game fair and square and certainly did not need the help of Carl Boyeson.

You can only say he’s the most pedantic referee in the EFL if you’ve seen ALL the others, surely?

Now who's  being pedantic?  Technically correct, I agree but  if you take it literally it would be the end of player of the season awards, BBC Sports Personality of the Year,  and a host of other similar awards both in and outside football!

Not me, that’s a ridiculous comparison.

Those awards are voted on by a sample of thousands rather than just one person and generally come after a wider list has been reduced.

I agree that Boyeson can be pedantic and he isn’t my favourite official - and I have seen him more times than a Plymouth fan - but I can’t say for certain he’s the “most pedantic referee in the EFL” unless I’ve got evidence of all the others to compare him with.

He was a Very pedantic referee

Oh he definitely is. I reckon I’ve seen him around 20 times and you’re never sure what you’re going to get with him.

If Boyeson is the most pedantic referee in the EFL then there are a few others competing for his crown. Boyeson has been on the List for yonks. One of the unspectacular toilers who never comes near either promotion or demotion I should imagine

Granted I may be overreacting about being the most pedantic but one of the most pedantic I have seen in years. And TVOS is right, I have only seen him once, when at the same time TVOS has probably only seen Kevin Johnson a handful of times compared to me which is probably double figures.

Mr Boyeson was in the middle for the Tranmere Rovers v Newport game. The visitors took an early lead and adopted a variety of time-wasting tactics as they successfully held on for the win. In that game he wasn't pedantic enough as ineffective warnings about time-wasting were not backed up by added time, think only one minute in the first half.

I've actually seen Kevin Johnson only twice and not since August 2016.

I've seen Carl Boyeson 24 times in league and cup action, which is the most frequent in my time watching Dale and probably our most frequent of all time.

Andy Haines comes next with 21 league & cup games appointments, as well as a few pre-season friendlies, which will take him above Boyeson if all games are counted.

Colin Webster is next on 20.

Certainly not my favourite referee and to be honest I'm surprised he's stayed on the list for so long. Although that could be said about several others.

He's refereed Southend 13 times, mostly away from home (unsurprising for geographical reasons - although one of those away games was at Portsmouth!!).

I've always thought him to be a decent-ish, steady journeyman of a referee, but he was never likely to be selected for the full-time Select Group 2. Was one of the .. er bulkier referees when he started out. Not so now and clearly coping with the rigours of the fitness tests.
