Carl Boyeson, Crewe v Tranmere
« on: Sun 18 Nov 2018 11:56 »
This was not the first time that I had seen Carl Boyeson at Gresty Road, but I was particularly interested to see whether the 'pedantic' Carl would turn up on this occasion in view of previous comments made on RTR.

This was (for once at Gresty Road) an enjoyable and quite exciting experience, and Carl and his team contributed in no small way to the experience. Yes, he did tend to be fussy over throw-ins and free kicks, but not unduly so in my view, yellow cards late on were issued appropriately, and the 'handbags' in the last few minutes were also dealt with properly although I think a Crewe player could count himself lucky not to receive a yellow card for writhing around on the ground in what seemed to be mock agony. There was quite a bit of time-wasting by Crewe players towards the end, with the inevitable applause to all and sundry as players were substituted, and I was slightly surprised to see just 4 minutes added time at the end, I was expecting 5-6 minutes.  Did Crewe deserve to win? No definitely not although their two second half goals were both well worked. Was Carl pedantic? Yes, to a certain extent but he also contributed his many years' experience to a good game. Over to you Boz  ;D

I thought Mr Boyeson had a good first hour and overall played his part in what was a decent game of football. I was 'seated' in the part of the away end nearest the Railway end, so didn't get the best view of things from the other half of the pitch. The first YC for Mullin was rightly given for a wild challenge with little attempt to play the ball, my initial impression was some might have brought out a different coloured card. However, there followed a string of free-kicks to Crewe. My position didn't allow me to judge their merits, but Mr Boyeson didn't manage the game well at this point, allowing Crewe to dawdle and run down the clock rather than making sure that the kicks were taken from the right spot and promptly and his loss of a grip on the game contributed to a growing frustration amongst the Rovers players, which came to a head in the handbags incident, AT mentions.

I didn't enjoy my trip to Gresty Road yesterday. Not down to the result which was a fair reflection of the balance of play, but for some heavy-handed stewarding of the away fans, yet homophobic abuse directed towards the far side AR (Mr Smith?) saw the same stewards doing nothing.

Thanks Boz, it's good that we seem agreed on Carl's performance, but a bit strange that you thought Crewe deserved to win and I didn't!

I'm sorry that you didn't enjoy your visit to Gresty Road. It was good that over 1600 fans made the journey from Tranmere, normally we only get that amount of away support when Port Vale come visiting. There seemed to be some problems at the Gresty Road end in the away stand when Tranmere equalised, which resulted in Carl holding up the restart, presumably because some away fans had come on to the pitch close to the AR (Matthew Smith?) and there was blue smoke coming from the away stand. It's a great pity if this and other incidents were dealt with in a heavy-handed manner and spoilt what was generally a good afternoon. I'm not sure about the homophobic abuse and which AR it was directed at. The AR on my side looked incredibly old (even older than Steve McNulty - what a player) and if this was Paul Hobday (senior AR on the dugout side?), then Matthew Smith would have been on the Tranmere side. All I can say is that the long-suffering Crewe fans are not normally into abuse of any sort (that is why I attend) and it is often more a case of getting them to shout anything, with the atmosphere akin to the fourth day of a cricket County Championship match which is petering out into a draw!

I was in the away stand at Gresty Road on one occasion when Crewe and the Palace were both in the Championship, and it was not an enjoyable experience, being very noisy and claustrophobic. It is not an experience I would care to repeat!

I hope you return to Gresty Road, - next season in L1 perhaps - and that you enjoy your experience rather more than you did on Saturday.

AT, I think my earlier remarks aimed for brevity at the expense of clarity.

Crewe look like a decent side, when allowed to play football and the youngster Ainley showed a lot of promise. On another day, Rovers might have got something from the game, but I didn't leave the ground feeling we were robbed, or attach any blame to Mr Boyeson and team for the outcome..

It was my 3rd visit to Gresty Road. The first was a Man City game, with Paul Danson as referee, re-arranged after the initial date cancelled due to a frozen pitch, can't recall the stand. More recently, in the stand we were in Saturday a 0-0 with Robert Madley in the middle, about 6 years ago. This time, there were very thorough body searches to get into the ground, unusual for a L2 game where there hasn't been a history of trouble. Maybe they do it to every visiting fan now, don't recall similar on my last trip.

As well as missing some of the incidents on the opposite end of the pitch, didn't spot the blue flare. It might have explained the stewards being edgy, I was made aware of one fan being slapped by a steward. The bad behaviour, sadly, was all from the Tranmere fans, including the unacceptable abuse of the AR in front of the stand, but the stewards ought to have seen who was responsible for that and taken action.

Hope you're right about a return fixture in L1  ;)
