Microscopist has left me with the Peter Maxwell Davies piece "Farewell to Stromness" going round and round in my brain. Fortunately, as earworms go, it could have been a lot worse.

Whilst every time I look at this thread I have Dougie MacLean's song in my ears for hours.  There is incidentally a small local heritage centre at the North End of Mull Hoy with many of Peter Maxwell Davies' manuscripts and other memorabelia on display.

On a vaguely "fitba" theme the recent death of the previous, illustrious, Celtic captain and one time City manager Billy McNeil reminded me of a trip to Vatersay where the remains of the coach that took the Vatersay Boys to Lisbon for Celtic's European Cup win could still be seen.  Since there was no MoT station on Barra or Vatersay they had to arrange to have the coach MoT'd en route in Glasgow before continuing to Lisbon.

Friday 5th April 2019
Lowland and East of Scotland U20 Development League Challenge  Cup Quarter Final
Bonnyton Thistle  2   v   2   Kelty Hearts

... A home official approached Mr Welsh, looking at his watch. The first period of extra time saw Bonnyton have the better chances, Kelty picking up their first yellow for dissent. Their second came three minutes into the second period, Mr Welsh deciding that a forward had taken a dive. At which point time ran out, off went the lights, three blasts indicated an abandonment and everybody trooped out, encouraged  by the man who wanted to lock the gate. What happens next? Who knows?

The match is being replayed tonight, again at Harriet Road, which seems rather harsh on Kelty. At least this time the kick-off is at 19.30, so unless penalties go to 20 all, there should be a winner before the lights go out.

It would seem to have been a lively affair again. Bonnyton were down to 9 men after 2 red cards (and manager removed) when they equalised on 119 minutes, but lost 6-5 on penalties. As for the lights, it must have been a close-run thing: apparently the local bye-law decrees that floodlights must go off at 22.00, though Thistle have fifteen minutes grace to allow spectators to leave safely. Which prompts the question as to why the first match was scheduled for 20.00, when extra time was a possibility.

In the ongoing quest to prolong the season, JCFC was far from the only visitor from the South to leave the train at Kirkconnel, to await the 14.00 kick-off of

Saturday 25th May 2019
SJFA West Region Championship
Kello Rovers   0   v   2   Rossvale
Chris Hughes (Renfrewshire); Josh Hay, Adam Duthie.

With over an hour and a half to kick-off, JCFC sought out the village's one retail outlet, a convenience store which was able to provide four slices of fruit pudding, to be looked forward to over the coming days. Once in the ground, it was possible to observe the arrival of the officials. First to drive in, in smart tie and shirtsleeves, called to mind the smouldering looks of a boy band member. He was followed some minutes later by a tall, slim youth, with smart hair, very blue suit and a slightly more diffident air. Eventually there appeared the referee, greeted by Rossvale players with a not unfriendly "No you again." He sounded as rough as he appeared, but at least it was not the Egghead Chris Hughes. The question as to which assistant was which was fortunately resolved during the warm-up, as the smouldering one pressed his credentials for fame with the initials JH prominently displayed on his black top. Buttercup, though, was the colour scheme for the day.

Before the match there was time for a chat with a gentleman setting up protection from the drizzle for a battery of five or six cameras, with which he produces match videos, often used for training purposes by SFA referees.

The match was of importance to the visitors - Kello were already down - as a win would bring promotion to the top flight for the first time in their relatively short existence. Any Rossvale nerves were immediately settled: they won a corner straight from the kick-off, from which a shot by their number 7 was blocked by the Kello keeper's legs; Rossvale gained possession, with an attacker heading away towards the touchline, when he was idiotically pushed from behind by a defender; Mr Hughes, ideally placed, gave the penalty and Rossvale made no mistake with the spot kick. There was almost a repeat on 4 minutes, a corner leading to a shot blocked on the line before being scrambled clear - JCFC briefly thought there would be a penalty and red card for handball, but not for the first time JCFC was wrong, as play continued without ado. Rossvale were much the better side and both Kello central defenders were perhaps fortunate to get away with just a ticking-off after reckless challenges. Rossvale did get the ball into the net, but Mr Hay flagged confidently for offside. Midway through the half Mr Hughes had a word with the home boss. On 28 minutes there was a foul by Kello and as the players tangled on the ground there appeared to be some slight retaliatory footwork, and the Rossvale number 6 tried to start an affray with a push, but nothing came of it. Still Mr Hughes kept his cards in his pocket, with just words of warning. He had not left them behind, however, and a reckless slide allowed the Kello number 11 to have a look at the yellow one, their number 4 following for handball. Rossvale had dominated, but chances had been blocked, with the keeper's legs to the rescue once again just before the break. Kello had had a couple of chances, with an early shot over the bar, while the Rossvale kkeper managed to get a foot to clear when Kello beat the offside trap.

For all their superiority, Rossvale were still not wholly confident, as one slip and a draw would not be enough. Three minutes into the second period the Kello number 6 comprehensively took out an opponent, but again a brief word was all that was deemed necessary. He did see yellow, however, on 56 minutes, Mr Hay flagging as players went to ground. Rossvale were rightly awarded a free-kick on 59 minutes - but as the attempted foul had impeded the opponent rather than making contact, the decision provoked mega-dissent from home players. As JCFC looked up from his notebook, Mr Hughes was seen to be writing, though who (if anyone) he had chosen to caution from among many candidates remains a mystery. JCFC does not often pay much attention to goalkeepers' legs, but they came to the rescue once again on the hour. Rossvale breathed a little more easily when they headed home a corner on 64 minutes. Not so their number 11, whose untidy challenge earned him a yellow card. On 83 minutes a wild tackle by the Kello number 2 was more of an assault than a challenge, provoking a bout of handbags, not helped by the fact that the card Mr Hughes was about to show was merely yellow. The same card appeared for what was obviously a retaliatory chop by the Rossvale number 16 seconds later. Any fears that Junior fitba was becoming rather civilised had been allayed in an entertaining game.

Mr Hughes actually looked less rough on the field and had a good manner with players and decent movement. Many would compliment him on the fact that there were 22 players on the pitch at the end, but really there should not have been. Nevertheless, the better side won and confrontations were not too prominent, so he fulfilled his contract - and spectators enjoyed it all greatly, with the possible exception of one middle-aged Rossvale fan leaning over the barrier, waving his hand and abusing Mr Duthie.

The train was not for another hour and a half, so refuge (and toilets!) was sought in the Queensberry Arms, where relations between players from either side appeared friendly - and JCFC was introduced by a local to the delights of Pink Grapefruit and Lemongrass gin. The journey home went as well as it could, and Brighouse was reached by 22.40.

Having decided to give the Junior Cup Final a miss next Sunday, JCFC was not too distressed to see Peter Stuart appointed - a referee whose one appearance under the distorting lens had been anything but impressive, but who must have done well in his Scottish League matches this season. The season is still not over, however, and JCFC will be heading to Scotland again in a fortnight for Glenafton v Talbot and the following day's Ardagh Cup final. Let's hope the appointments for these are more to his liking.

Having been close to my favourite, eating indulgence at Blackaddie House Hotel in Sanquhar, you'll perhaps now be looking forward to a dip in the Prince Charles sponsored, refurbished, open air swimming pool in New Cumnock next week .

Meantime, we've been enjoying the sunshine on Leith this week (though tempered by the wind) as we visited the General Assembly - this time being friends of the Moderator's wife - which suggests an upmarket version of the "Minister's wife" game for Whistleblower where, in line with many of the words used in debates, the adjectives must all have eight letters or more.

As the train approached Sanquhar, I did actually recall your recommendation of Blackaddie, though sadly I don't think I'll ever be in a position to test it out.

As for your alternative suggestion:

New Cumnock for football's OK
Three hours is a bearable stay,
But a dip in the pool -
Do you think I'm a fool?
On reflection you'd better not say.

The Moderator's Wife is an avaricious wife, the Moderator's wife is a bellicose wife, the Moderator's Wide is a courageous wife, the Moderator's wife is a delightful wife, the Moderator's wife is a energetic wife......I could go on but really shouldn't

Three of the adjectives could reasonably applied in this case, but avaricious and bellicose - really Whistleblower!

JCFC wil doubtless have noted that Auchinleck Talbot warmed up for his visit with a win over Largs to gain the Scottish Junior Final, but he may have missed a bit of background from the Ayrshire Post.  Apparently Mark Shankland, Auchinleck striker, cancelled his stag event in Benidorm so he could spend the week in training (presumably for the final and not the wedding?).  His mates however decided to go anyway, without him!

Added

Reading this week's Ayrshire Post it seems that despite Mr Shankland's sacrifice he only managed a second half appearance from the substitutes' bench.

With sincere apologies to the Moderator's wife...simply an exercise in random imagination on my part rather than any High Church malice. I'll replace with The Moderator's Wife is an affectionate wife, the Moderator's Wife is a beneficient wife

What I have discovered lately - and with enormous pleasure - is that Matthew MacDermid, first seen seen six years ago at Crichton, has had a further promotion and will be classed as Category 1D for next season, meaning that he will get some outings in SPFL Division 2. Excellent news indeed!

My schemes may not be the best laid, but when it comes to ganging agley they are without equal. The train that was to have taken me from Carlisle to New Cumnock was cancelled, with vague promises of a replacement bus at some point. As this would have arrived much too late, the next few minutes were spent obtaining a refund. On the sour grapes principle, I suspect that New Cumnock could scarcely count as promised joy.

It would have been good, though, to see once again Graham Grainger, who is another to have been promoted to 1D for next season.
