Following in the tradition of John Knox the second Sunday in June is a Communion Sunday, so bring a picnic!  However, judging by the reading it might not be necessary?

Whereas the second Saturday in June is World Gin Day - so I shall have to force myself to partake. John Knox would doubtless not have approved.

Meanwhile perusal of the Ayrshire referees site reveals a few points.

Calum Scott is now listed as Category 1, so is presumably a third to be promoted.

Dr John McKendrick is listed as a Category 4, having left the Category 1 list at 51.

Ross Haswell is shown as a Category 3 referee, rather than as a Specialist Assistant. At 39/40 it seems unlikely that he will make it to Category 1, to which he was once quite close.

I once rechristened Dr L
"Our well-read friend from Ayr."
Today we found he DOES read well
Should anyone here care.

Alas, his accent still reveals
A strongish Stockport style:
Far better tones are those, one feels,
Of Carrick or of Kyle.

He's older, just, than even me,
(The year is still the same,)
But well preserved. It's good to see
The face behind the name.

The minister, that goodly man,
Exhorts us "Help the poor"
And he himself does what he can:
Comme St Martin de Tours.

And so, to act as he believes,
He kindly gave away
His jacket, also half his sleeves -
One beggar's lucky day.

That being so, one can't complain
(Though short sleeves disappoint)
And therefore he can still retain
Each hard-earned Brownie point!

Not sure whether you interpretation is accurate, but if so the jacket may be somewhere in the picture above. I doubt whether he followed St Martin's example and cut the sleeves off his shirt!  Earlier this week one of our church ladies had a request from Newton Primary School, (which is in the North part of Ayr and includes some areas that are within the 5% most deprived in Scotland)  The school is acting as a hub for distributing clothes, children's books and games etc.  They needed more goods.  The request was passed around by Facebook and other means and got a good response from Alloway folk.  As you will have noted we have a weekly collection for the local foodbank on a Sunday and it was arranged that people could drop goods off for Newton at the same time.  The picture above represents some of the two vanloads that were collected today.

Being incarcerated in Yorkshire, it had until now escaped my notice that the 63 member clubs of the West Region of the Scottish Juniors have resigned en bloc and transferred to a newly formed West of Scotland League under SFA jurisdiction, one step (or more) below the Highland and Lowland Leagues in the Pyramid system the SFA have been working towards. So decades of tradition come to an end, though it may perhaps lead to improvements in certain areas.

I wonder how well many of these clubs will cope with ground grading issues: the toilet facilities at Blantyre Vics were particularly horrendous, and others nearly as bad. It will take a considerable degree of effort and investment to bring many grounds up to an acceptable standard in terms of facilities.

I am pleased  to learn that the sixteen vestal virgins who were leaving for the coast reached it at Ayr and have settled in Alloway.

Yes, that was down to me, a bit of whilst the cat's away...!
Vincent was a wonderful but eccentric organist who had "Raiders of the Lost Ark", the theme from "Last of the Summer Wine" and "A Whiter Shade of Pale" amongst his signature pieces.  On Palm Sunday my suggestion to use "Raiders of the Lost Ark" was disallowed.  But last week on an old hard drive I came across "Whiter Shade of Pale" - which I hadn't been able to find when I put together a tribute CD for Vincent. So that was too good an opportunity to miss.  Fortunately it has received favourable comments from members of the congregation so I should avoid the cutty stool on this occasion.

Watched a new name for me yesterday in Craig Napier refereeing Motherwell v Ross County. Thought he did very well, the penalty was an easy decision in a straightforward game and the accompanying dissent clamped down on with the minimum of fuss. He looks about 12 and refereed with a smile on his face and was always talking to the players. Encouraging.

That's good to hear, Tweed. Dr Napier has long been something of a favourite of mine, though his firm approach has not found favour with the Pie and Bovril intelligentsia. I found him most approachable on the one occasion I spoke to him. He has now had three premiership matches this season, I believe, and I hope he will continue to prosper.

I certainly would have no fears if he was pencilled beside us again - though I have long noticed a trend that referees come up to the top flight and impress and then over time become pickier and pickier - Don Robertson the one who doesn't seem to have reverted.

Unlike the Celtic manager, I thought Willie Collum also had a superb game today to follow on from the performance I watched yesterday.  Three penalties were absolutely spot on, tried to play an advantage at the last one and if he made one mistake it was not penalising a push in the lead up to Celtic's second goal.  As for the Celtic manager I think he may have been trying to deflect some of his failings somewhere else.

Unusually, I watched the Aberdeen-Celtic game mainly because a player, who wasn't good enough for us in the Fourth Division, is now a first choice for Aberdeen to see how he is getting on.  Like you, I though Mr Collum had a great game.

I'm afraid the Napier files part 2 involving Motherwell was less good.  Ignoring the red card for foul and abusive language which we are appealing, this was a nightmare performance.  At one point a viewing colleague on Skype said this referee is an absolute maniac, I don't think he knows what he's going to do next.

He missed a blatant penalty and red card in the first half when Ojo brought the goalward shot down with his hand whilst diving to block it, in 2021 rules it is a penalty and red card every day.  A Motherwell passage of play was broken up for the ball going over the goal line when the ball was not within a yard of it, his assistant didn't help here but he should have overruled. Whilst we did end up sticking the ball in the pokey, the whistle had long sounded and Aberdeen had long stopped.

The big moment was the red card.  Polworth was cleaned out but to be fair he played an outstanding advantage and when he came back to check up on Polworth (whose shoulder was dislocated btw) he within seconds brandished a red card.  Clearly no idea what was said but what I will say is there was no reason on that passage of play for Polworth to have been annoyed by the referee.  We're apparently considering an appeal but how that will go on a he said he said debate I have no idea.

However whilst that had the most lasting impact on the game, it was far from the worst decision, a disallowed Aberdeen goal took that title from a short corner, a striker raised unchallenged to head home but this was disallowed for pushing.  I've reviewed it several times and no MOtherwell player was close enough to their opposing number to have been fouled, in fact I'd say it was a perfect example how to socially distance at corners.

This was a shambles I'm afraid, a minor scuffle which he dealt with OK inside the first 20 minutes seemed to rile him and his performance headed to depths not seen for a long time in the Premiership and without wanting to be nasty Aberdeen v Motherwell is not an unpleasant game nor teams that are difficult to referee, he made it so.

I note that in the current SFA appointments list, Kylie Cockburn has reverted to her maiden name of McMullan.
