Jarred Gillett - Nottm Forest v Aston Villa
« on: Sun 05 Nov 2023 16:14 »
I only saw the first half of this game but it seemed Gillett was prepared to let it flow, there were very few stoppages as a consequence and the Australian referee just blended into the background as he usually does.

I know he isn’t everyone’s cup of tea (who is these days?) but I rate him very highly. He is a better on field referee than a VAR official but I think that can be said for a lot of his colleagues.

Talking of VAR, two incidents towards the end of the first half. Darren Cann flagged a Forest player offside just before there was a foul in the Villa penalty area. Jarred Gillett looked as though he was about to point to the spot but Cann’s offside flag made sure there was no penalty. The VAR thankfully on this occasion backed up the on field call.

Then there was a penalty shout at the other end where a ball was headed onto a Forest arm. To me, it wasn’t handball as the Forest player could hardly avoid the contact and didn’t get his arms into an unnatural position, in the modern vernacular. A quick check was all that was needed and again VAR was correct in saying no penalty.

Didn’t see the second half but from what I saw, Gillett was cool and impressive.

He needs consistent games in the Prem. I don't think he's gotten 2 games in a row at all since his promotion 2 years ago. He has the makings of being a very reliable referee, he just needs gametime in the Prem rather than being in the Championship every second week.
