No complaints with Pawson today, much better than he’s been in the last few weeks...

Again, we are talking about Big Brother watching from Stockley Park..

Lemina went over far too easily despite contact, however it has to be given as a penalty...

I’m interested in other posters thoughts  about the sickeningly late Arsenal equaliser.... was Holding interfering with play? Was he in Areola’s eyesight?

In my view, unless Holding touched it, or was right on top of Areola, it’s disallowed. However, if not, it has to stand.

Overall, another match where VAR has dominated, and the disallowed Arsenal goal for a toenail offside is really getting stupid now.

...waiting for you to add "how on earth did he manage to find 7 additional minutes, was Sir Alex Ferguson playing Monsieur Hublot with the watch etc. etc."

I did think there was inconsistency in the awarding of yellow cards, or the failure to aware them to Arsenal players for similar offences, but otherwise no real complaints.  VAR as before, if you're going to use it, then toenails or any other protrusion counts.

And there, ladies and gentlemen, is the reason the game is in such a state!

Football has always been a contact sport.  Contact in itself is not a foul.  Incidental contact is inevitable all the time.  Yet we now have the farce of a player who feels the slightest touch from an opponent hurling himself to the ground.  No doubt believing he was 'entitled to go down'.  And, with empty grounds, we hear the screaming and shrieking that would shame a fractious toddler, all intended to influence the referee.

You cannot blame referees though.  They appear to be told to penalise every tiny contact in the box with a penalty, reducing the game to a farce.  Is this really what VAR was for, or even what football is all about?  Nobody is saying we should have games like the 1970 FA Cup Final replay, but the balance has swung too far and ruined the game.

To be penalised, a player in an offside position essentially has to do one of three things in that situation:

1. Play the ball

2.  Attempt to play the ball

3. Impact on an opponent's ability to play the ball

In this instance, Holding clearly does neither 1 or 2 so the only potential consideration is 3.  To be in the goalkeeper's eyeline is not enough to be penalised - he would have to be positioned between the goalkeeper and the incoming shot, thereby reducing the amount of time the goalkeeper has to react and consequently 'impacting the goalkeeper's ability to play the ball'.

As such, I don't believe an offence has been committed and allowing the goal to stand was the correct, and it has to be said, excellent decision.
