Riley was IMO a poor/overrated referee and to me his time in charge of PGMOL is up. The situation has become a circus.
He needs to move on and appoint someone with the leadership that’s required to get English refereeing back to the pinnacle

We may disagree (in the nicest possible way!) on many things ajb but couldn’t agree more with you here. Riley was a poor official whose appointments inexplicably far exceeded his ability and his management of PGMOL is just as bad.
Long overdue taxi for Mr Riley please

I can only agree with these 2 posts.  As for his time being up as PGMOL boss, I gather a few former international referees believe he should never have been appointed in the first place, and personally I was flabbergasted when he was.  I could recall to many games he refereed when his player management skills to my mind were sadly lacking.  In another thread on City's game this evening, mention is made of Brych's natural authority.  I never felt that could be said of Mr Riley.

Out of interest to whom is Riley accountable and could they not sack him?

PGMOL evaluator will have already made a decision on whether they believe the decision was correct or not, and the appeal panel's decision to overturn the red card won't affect that either way.
Doesn't that show up PGMOL for their utter arrogance.  I sometimes suspect Riley and his ilk believe the game is there to serve his organisation, not the other way round.

And therein lies the fundamental conflict of interest.  The person responsible for appointing match officials, for setting and upholding standards is accountable to the very teams impacted by those match officials.  It would never be permitted in the commercial / financial world and it should not be permitted in football.

Whilst I agree with what you say, surely the point is that football IS the commercial/financial world.

Sadly we seem now to live in a world where money and profit is everything, and integrity and standards are seen as an irrelevance.  We see it every day of our lives.  Worst of all, nobody seems to care.
