I believe that Breakspear has been knocking on the SG2 door for a little while now. Quite why he never seems to make it when they take people who have done barely a year in Divs 1 and 2 is hard to fathom and leads me to suspect that there is more to it that just refereeing ability. On his day Breakspear is a very decent referee and deserves his chance at a higher level.
A suggestion that progression and promotion in refereeing circles could be based on something other than sheer ability?  Surely not! :-\ ;D

Card-free games like that are quite interesting.  There seems to be an assumption they're rare, but looking at the stats they happen every week (although CB would not be high up the list of likely candidates), and they seem to involve certain refs rather more often than the law of averages would su
This is an interesting phenomenon.  I can recall watching some referees when the TV cameras were around that would be waving cards at every opportunity.  Yet in the absence of live coverage the cards stayed in their pockets.  One notable example was Uriah Rennie who was actually quite good when he refereed properly as opposed to the TV way.  Now that every game is under so much scrutiny, there is little opportunity to referee with any common sense.

Any suggestion that progression and promotion might be due to something other than sheer ability. How outrageous; it has me reaching for my smelling salts !

Edited to fix the quote thingamajigga - hope I did it right! bmb

Thanks.

FWIW, I thought he did pretty well, certainly didn’t stand out as a clown. The penalty looked fair to me too. The Marquis booking did seem harsh though - especially if Mayor’s early one wasn’t penalised in the same way. The handbags at the end could perhaps have been settled by a quick word and a handshake rather than a double booking. But I’m no expert on the laws in those circumstances.

Charlie is not one to settle for a handshake if there's a double booking in the offing.

Welcome, by the way.

Thanks Acme.

BTW, the advice to be wary of Soccerbase was good, it's been confirmed to me that there were only 5 cards in Argyle -v- Pompey on Monday.

I wonder which referee has gone the longest without a cardfree match. I have neither the time nor the confidence in soccerbase to check.

However off the top of my head I'd go for Alan Young who does not appear to have ever had a cardless match in his 6 years of refereeing at "Conference" level or above.

This will not surprise anyone who saw him at Portman Road last season !!

A certain official called Parker from Preston in years gone by would be a strong contender.

He would straight red card anything that moved ....

Good call by Nemesis. My deliberations also suggest Mr Young is the winner of this slightly dubious honour.

I think that Mr Young must have been a school teacher in a previous life because it appears that he likes to write reports ----there are better things in life but whatever floats you boat Average of just over 4 per game and that doesn't include the dismissals.
Referee's decision used to be final!

And that average is still lower than Breakspear!!

Jim Parker was just a man before his time ....... I bet if you check the stats he would not make the top ten today.

Probably does them at work  ;).  One of the legion of FA and County FA "cronies" that dominate the lists of Referees and Assistant Referees.

You’re assuming school teachers like writing reports.
