Juventus have denied this but it is of course a big story. In fact I have never been so excited since.....well Leicester City won the title when Chelsea won. Which is why competition must remain. A cartel, a closed shop is unacceptable.

Surprised Barcelona are thinking of leaving considering their precarious financial position.

It would seem Woodward and Agnelli and possibly more set to do a Cameron and do a runner after they’ve been totally humiliated by their fraternity! How cowardly!

Hopefully never to be seen in football again!

GameDay 2021 Thank you for all of the updates.  Just one request though - please turn your caps lock button off. If you need it on for accessibility issues then that is acceptable, so please just say if that is the case, but if not, it just makes you look very shouty! Thank you

Good to see that by standing together fans, players & managers seem to have put and end to this farce getting off the ground. I'm not the biggest fan of FIFA or UEFA & like most of us, have several issues with them but I think their hardline stance in relation to this has been spot on.  Their motivation may well be different to us as fans but credit where it's due.  There have been a lot of big names in football stand up and be counted on the right side of the game today.

It will be interesting to see where the game will go from here. Not just in terms of sanctions against the 12, if any are forthcoming, but whether it will ultimately lead to a bit of a shake up in the infrastructure and make up of domestic leagues and International competitions to prevent any further attempt at this sort of thing.  Oh and hopefully the FA will take a long hard look at it's fit & proper persons test which is not fit for purpose!

Glad it’s over.

Hopefully more apologies from the clubs come out. Fair play for Arsenal being the only one to actually apologise in their initial statement.

I too am glad that, for now at least, the idea is dead.

I have to say I am somewhat amazed by the hero worshiping of players for in my opinion quite mildly expressing a stance against the super league. If any player were to come out in support of the league they would have been met with massive criticism so I don't quite understand how expressing the opposite opinion earns them so much praise. Furthermore I didn't actually see any player or manager say explicitly they would not play/manage in it if it went ahead, just that they hoped it didn't, I got the feeling that a major issue for some players, quite reasonably, was that they weren't given advance notice. I wonder if they had would that have influenced a small numbers position on the matter.

I know it is easy to engage in player bashing and I don't want to do that as obviously they can't control the reaction to their actions, I am just at a loss at the level of praise for what are to me, quite minor dissensions that came when the idea seemed already to be dead in the water or close to it.

With reference to my reply #29, it appears the sword of Damocles has been snapped in two. Good. Now is the time for some sober reflection, not least by the fans who have been, quite rightly, very vocal in the past few days.

Many fans, not all by any means but many, are totally opposed to foreign owners except when one comes into offering a massive cash injection ( often borrowed cash ) to their own club because they think it will bring them success. They are right; it often does. However, it is invariably ( with perhaps one or two noble exceptions ) a Faustian pact. The owners will demand the soul of the club. That is precisely what we have just witnessed with this proposed Super League now, happily, strangled at birth. If anything may be learned from this sorry business it might be to reject the notion of "buying" success. However, I fear that big business has its talons so firmly imbedded into the structure of the game that this may be whistling in the dark.

I do believe the fans' voices have been heard; hence the mealy mouthed apologies being uttered by the owners. Now is the time for the fans to use this influence to try and shape for the good the way their clubs are managed. It certainly won't be easy but the effort to rescue the beautiful game from the clutches of corporate management and big business is surely worth it.

So within a year Liverpool and Manchester have proposed Project Big Picture then voted against it and joined a Super League then left it two days later.  The executives of these two clubs should hang their heads in shame and never consider getting involved in restructuring proposals again.

I waited for the official announcement hoping that my club, Manchester City would not be listed as those joining the "super" league.  I'm saddened and a little surprised that we would want to join with those who sought to have us excluded from Europe on spurious grounds.  Only a little surprised as commercial interests have clearly taken preference over  principles and I guess "keep your enemies closer" comes into play.  Whilst I have long considered the footballing authorities at international, continental and national level to be inept I don't have much confidence that this will improve matters.  I have posted before about the inevitability of football braking into two  codes and I have read, whether fact or fantasy based I know not, that there may be changes.  Possibly games decided as in rugby on a points basis - goals from outside the penalty area counting more points than those from within, a game of four quarters rather than two halves and so on - true or not I don't know?
A straw ;poll of around 1000 City fans show 95.7% against.  What do I do?   City are my club - I believe that my great grandfather played for them, dad was a lifetime supporter and they have always been my team.
It's tough to know what to do.......for what it is worth I won't be renewing my Arsenal supporters club membership

It's people like you guys I feel the most for.  Proper fans who are having their clubs completely stolen away from them.  We all know the big clubs have many plastic armchair fans but they do have a lot of real fans as well and it is the real fans that will suffer. The armchair fans however, will continue to buy their TV subscriptions and claim to be the top fan, never missed a game etc. but the majority of them wouldn't be able to even pinpoint the ground on a map, let actually alone go to a game.

More than ever I am glad I don't support a big team. I struggled enough with AFCB going into the PL. My little tinpot club that I thought nothing of jumping in a car and driving for 8 hours to Carlisle to watch them in League 2 (maybe league 1) and them getting hammered 3-0 - bank holiday Monday many years ago. I'd do that time and again. Rarely missed a game home or away.  We had no money, we were on 1st name terms with the bailiffs, our squad was threadbare but there was something special about it all, it was our club. As soon as they reached the PL, they stopped being my little tin pot club and became a corporate entity and I hated it. I watched the first season in the PL, well most games anyway and held a season ticket for the next 3 years although never attended, nor did I watch the games on TV. I gave my season tickets to a fan led charity that used them each game to send a disabled or terminally ill child and their carer to a game. A little bit of magic for those kids. Then for the first time in 25 years I gave up my season ticket, it was easier than I thought.  I'd go and meet up with team ref for a coffee (if they are friends of mine) and then go home and watch the NBI. I live just 7 miles from the ground. I remember one such coffee meeting, when I asked the referee who they were playing that day - the look of shock on his face is still with me. He's known me 20 odd years and he said something like, he never thought he'd see my love for my club die and in all the years he'd known me, I'd know every result, every goal scorer, every referee (and what colour shirt they had worn), every attendance figure etc and now I didn't even know who the opposition were. It was at the end of that season I didn't bother renewing my ST. They're still my team, to a degree.  You don't lose 40+ years of following a club completely. I was 3 weeks old when I went to my first game but my heart went out of it due to the money league.

Covid aside I'd think nothing of jumping on a plane to Budapest on a Friday morning, watching live NBI games on Fri night, Saturday & Sunday, possibly a non league game (I have 2 non leagues teams in Budapest), possibly an NBII game as well - kick off times dependant and flying back to the UK on Sunday night. I did that one weekend when AFCB were away to Man Utd in the PL.  It cost me the same for the flights, my travel cards in Hungary & food, accommodation is free for me there, as it would have to have gone to the Man U game & I know which was better value and what a fab weekend I had.
I still won't be renewing my Arsenal supporters club membership.

I have always said that, in sporting terms, football was my spouse and rugby my mistress. I am now no longer so sure of those designated roles.

I understand.  I reached that point the more successful AFCB became, you'd think years of bailiffs and being in L1 & 2 dreaming of a better future for your club would lead to loving it actually happen. Instead I watched my club become less and less of being my club and more and more of a corporate money machine and I hated it.  It was my love for the sheer simplicity and randomness of the NBI that restored my love of football. I went from just watching Kassai's games or the highlights of his games 10/12 years ago to the current place of watching every single game every week.  I've not missed a single NBI game in 5 years. Even when I have been out in Hungary for games I catch up on all the other games I might miss live either on the TV channel as they get repeated during the week or on the sports channel website where videos of the games remain available for 3/4 months. The PL can keep it's millionaires I'll be sticking to my imperfect league with it's tactically questionable players and several moments of comedy gold - normally down to the defenders (and I use the term loosely) who play for my team! I hope you find something, a non league team or obscure league somewhere, that restores your love & passion for the game.
